Public Windows file inventories identify Microsoft as the publisher and report a valid Microsoft signature for some builds. Historical records include Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10, while current installations can vary by edition, architecture, and build. There is no single correct universal file size, hash, or version.
That build dependence matters. A copy from another Windows release may have the same filename but still be incompatible with your installation.
Causes by symptom
| Symptom | Most likely explanation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| “umpoext.dll is missing” | The protected Windows file is absent, quarantined, or damaged | Check Protection history, then run DISM and SFC |
| “umpoext.dll was not found” | Windows or an application cannot locate the file or one of its dependencies | Repair Windows and check the application event that triggered it |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The named file or a dependency it needs may be missing | Do not assume replacing only umpoext.dll will fix it |
| “Could not be loaded” | The file is corrupt, incompatible, or its dependency chain is broken | Run Windows repair commands and restart |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | The binary is corrupt or belongs to a different architecture or build | Restore the matching Windows copy through servicing |
| Error began after an update | The update or upgrade may have been incomplete | Finish Windows Update, restart, then repair system files |
| Error began after malware removal | Security software may have removed a damaged or malicious file | Run a full security scan, inspect quarantine, then repair Windows |
Fix umpoext.dll with Windows Update
A failed or incomplete update can leave protected components in an inconsistent state. Install pending updates before attempting more invasive recovery.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the action that produced the
umpoext.dllerror again.
If Windows Update reports an error:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update.
- Select Run.
- Apply the suggested repair and check for updates again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install pending updates and restart.
The repair worked if Windows Update completes normally and the original application or Windows feature starts without the DLL message. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Repair the Windows component store and system files
This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted umpoext.dll.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It may appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window during the scan.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses as a source for protected files. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Running SFC first can leave it without a healthy source, so keep this order.

A successful result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations or found corrupt files and repaired them. Test the application or Windows feature after restarting.
If repeated manual scans leave you guessing which repair changed the system, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, but Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the built-in path and the correct first choice for this Microsoft file.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, install pending updates and restart before trying again. If SFC says it could not repair some files, continue to the recovery steps below rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a file after detecting tampering, or it can remove a damaged file during cleanup. Do not restore a file merely because its filename is umpoext.dll.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection that names
umpoext.dll. - Check the recorded path, detection details, and action taken.
A copy in C:WindowsSystem32 that has a verifiable Microsoft signature may be a false positive, but restoration is safe only when the detection is clearly false. If the file is unsigned, is in a temporary or user-writable folder, or is associated with other suspicious activity, do not restore it.
Instead:
- Leave the detection quarantined.
- Run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan.
- If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Antivirus offline scan from the same area.
- After the device is clean, run DISM and SFC again.
Verify the Windows file without replacing it
You can check whether the expected file exists without downloading anything.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Search for
umpoext.dll. - Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Open the signature details and verify that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
A missing signature does not by itself prove malware, because file properties can vary across builds and damaged files may not display normally. Treat an unexpected location, a recent unexplained creation, or a failed signature as a reason to scan and repair Windows, not as a reason to copy another file over it.
If the message appears when launching one application
The application may be the program displaying the error even though the underlying failure is in Windows. “Reinstall the program” is generic text and does not prove that the application owns umpoext.dll.

Windows Features are also not the normal remedy. Do not enable or disable random features to replace this DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for umpoext.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Public export information for umpoext.dll identifies DllMain and ExtensionInit, not DllRegisterServer.
Recommended Free Tools
Therefore, this is not a recommended repair:
regsvr32 umpoext.dll
It can produce another error without repairing the underlying Windows component. A system DLL being missing or corrupt is a servicing problem, not normally a registration problem.
Check drivers only when the timing points to power hardware
A graphics, chipset, storage, or firmware problem can cause broader power-management errors, but updating a driver does not replace umpoext.dll. Use Device Manager only when the error began after a hardware change, sleep or hibernation failure, or a driver installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, System devices, or Batteries.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Prefer the computer or device manufacturer’s official driver package when Windows cannot find a suitable update. Do not remove system files as a substitute for updating a driver.
If identifying which of several devices needs a newer driver is the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan finds; driver installation is handled by the full version, while Device Manager and the hardware manufacturer remain the appropriate manual sources.

- Run DISM and SFC once more from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Review the SFC result and the CBS log at:
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery.
- If Fix problems using Windows Update is available, select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts to reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
- If the failure started after a known update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates and remove the recent problematic update only when Windows identifies it as removable.
- If a restore point predates the failure, use System Restore.
- If corruption returns, check disk health and back up important files.
- For a custom, stripped, or damaged Windows image, repair or rebuild it from matching installation media.
If none of these options works, contact Microsoft Support or the device manufacturer. A repair install is safer than substituting a DLL from another Windows build.
Why downloading umpoext.dll is risky
Avoid random DLL download websites and file-copy instructions. A downloaded file can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, come from a different Windows build, have an invalid signature, or fail because the actual missing item is a dependency.
Do not copy a replacement into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
and do not place it beside an application to bypass the error. Windows servicing can overwrite the file later, while an incompatible copy can create “not designed to run on Windows” errors or additional loader failures.
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Microsoft recovery options, matching installation media, and an affected application’s official installer when investigation proves that the application is responsible.
FAQ
Is umpoext.dll malware?
Not by itself. It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows power-service DLL when it is in the expected Windows directory and has a valid Microsoft signature. Verify the location and signature, then scan the computer if either is suspicious.
Is umpoext.dll included with Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Public file records cover multiple Windows releases, including Windows 8, 8.1, and 10. The exact presence, version, architecture, and contents depend on the installed Windows edition and build, so do not assume that every release has an identical copy.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No, not as a default fix. umpoext.dll is associated with Windows power management, not those redistributable packages.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No. There is no evidence that this ordinary Windows system DLL is a self-registering COM component.
Why does the error mention a program?
The program may be the process that attempted to load a Windows component. The message does not prove that the program supplied umpoext.dll or that reinstalling it alone will repair Windows.
What if SFC says it repaired the file but the error remains?
Restart first and test again. If the error continues, the named DLL may have a missing dependency, the application may be using an incompatible copy, or the Windows installation may have additional corruption. Continue with Windows Update, event logs, application repair, and recovery options rather than downloading another DLL.
