deviceassociation.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, normally found in C:WindowsSystem32 and, on 64-bit Windows, also in C:WindowsSysWOW64. If Windows or an application says it is missing, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The file is generally described as Device Association Client DLL. It is an inbox Windows component associated with device association and device-management functions, including the relationships Windows maintains with hardware and devices.

It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX runtime, .NET package, or known game middleware library. Microsoft does not provide deviceassociation.dll as a separate official download.
The same filename can appear in several generic messages:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- “This application failed to start because deviceassociation.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because deviceassociation.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading deviceassociation.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file deviceassociation.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “deviceassociation.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not prove that a particular game or application normally installs the file. They only describe what Windows reported when loading a component or dependency.
Causes and the right first fix

Fix 1: Update Windows and restart
Start with Windows Update because cumulative updates can replace damaged or outdated system components.
- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available quality, security, and driver updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Repeat the check until no further updates are offered.
- Reopen the affected application or repeat the Windows action that produced the error.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not copy a DLL into System32 at this stage.

Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows component store with DISM before using System File Checker. This is the most appropriate repair when the file is genuinely missing or damaged.
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Keep the window open until it reports completion.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program or device again.
A successful DISM run may report that the restore operation completed successfully. SFC may say that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found corruption it could not repair.
If SFC repaired files, restart and test again. If it says that some files could not be repaired, run DISM once more, restart, and repeat SFC. If Windows Update is damaged, DISM may require a matching installation source using /Source:<path> /LimitAccess; that source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and build.
Repeating SFC without first repairing the component store usually does not add useful information. If you want a guided scan while avoiding repeated manual commands and uncertain results, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not required for the Microsoft repair process.
Fix 3: Check whether the file is present and legitimate
A missing-file message does not always mean the named file is absent. The loader may be reporting a missing dependency, an incompatible architecture, or a damaged installation.
Check the normal locations:
C:WindowsSystem32deviceassociation.dllC:WindowsSysWOW64deviceassociation.dllon 64-bit Windows
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Do not swap files between these folders.

To inspect a file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter one of the paths above in the address bar.
- Right-click
deviceassociation.dlland choose Properties. - Check the Digital Signatures tab if it is available.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
- Check the General tab to confirm that the file is in a Windows system directory.
A copy beside an application executable, in Downloads, or in an arbitrary writable folder deserves suspicion. Do not replace the system copy with that file.
If the file exists in the correct directory but an application still reports it as missing, the application may be 32-bit, or one of the DLL’s dependencies may be missing. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency rather than deviceassociation.dll itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If the error appears only when starting one program, repair that program before changing Windows. A damaged private installation, incompatible update, or missing application dependency can produce a Windows-looking DLL error.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Restart the application and test it.
If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset if the option is available. Reset can remove application data and settings, so use it only after checking what the program stores locally.
If there is no Repair option:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the application again from its publisher’s official source.
- Install it and test it before adding modifications, plug-ins, or older patches.
On Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the program, choose Advanced options, and use Repair or Reset where offered.
If the program is a game or specialist application, reinstalling that program remains the definitive fix when its own installation is damaged. Do not assume that installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will fix this filename. The evidence does not connect deviceassociation.dll to those redistributables.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a system file, although the filename alone does not prove that a detection was a false positive.
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for the file or for a related Windows component.
- Open an entry to inspect its path and detection details.
Restore or allow a quarantined file only when all of these are true:

- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- The path is the expected Windows system directory.
- The file has a valid Microsoft signature.
- A current scan does not identify it as malicious.
- You understand why the security product removed it.
If the path is Downloads, an application folder, or another unexpected location, leave it quarantined. Run a Full scan. If you suspect deeper malware, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same Windows Security area.
Protection History normally retains events for a limited period, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible.

Driver work is relevant when the failure coincides with Bluetooth, printer, USB, or device-pairing problems. It is not a general replacement method for deviceassociation.dll.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing device, such as Bluetooth, Printers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows after the installation.
- If the problem began after a driver update, open Properties > Driver and select Roll Back Driver if available.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain it from Windows Update or the computer or device manufacturer’s official support page. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through multiple driver versions by showing what it identifies; its driver installation requires the full version, and the manufacturer’s driver remains the appropriate source when available.
Fix 7: Undo a recent update or system change
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, failed rollback, cleanup operation, or other system change, use Windows recovery tools.
For a recent update:
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Select Uninstall updates.
- Choose the recent update associated with the failure.
- Select Uninstall and restart.
You can also open Settings > System > Recovery in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery in Windows 10, and review the available recovery options.

- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without intentionally removing personal files. Back up important work before using recovery tools.

If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component and several Windows functions are failing, use a supported in-place Windows reinstall. Back up important files first, then use Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page or Windows 10 download page.
Choose an installation method that preserves personal files and applications when that option is offered. Confirm the Windows edition and language before proceeding. Resetting Windows or performing a clean installation is more disruptive and should be a later step after backup and recovery planning.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 deviceassociation.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose self-registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components. No Microsoft registration procedure has been established for deviceassociation.dll, so registering it is not a supported general repair.

Do not download a replacement DLL
Avoid generic DLL download sites sites and manually copying a replacement into System32 or SysWOW64. The file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture or Windows build, carry an invalid signature, or fail to repair the dependency that caused the error.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, an in-place Windows repair, or the affected application’s official installer instead. Those methods restore components as part of a matching Windows or application installation.
Frequently asked questions
Is deviceassociation.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a genuine Windows system DLL generally described as Device Association Client DLL. A legitimate copy should normally be in a Windows system directory and Microsoft-signed.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not merely because this filename appears in an error. There is no verified connection between deviceassociation.dll and those redistributables. Install an application runtime only when the affected program’s official documentation specifically requires it.
Why is it in System32 and SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. A 32-bit application can report a missing DLL even when the 64-bit copy exists.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
Check the application’s architecture and repair the application. The message may identify a missing dependency rather than the named file. Version or build mismatches can also produce “not designed to run on Windows” or entry-point errors.
Should I restore every antivirus detection?
No. Restore a quarantined item only after confirming its Windows system path, Microsoft signature, and clean scan result. Otherwise leave it quarantined and investigate the detection.
When should I update a driver?
Update or reinstall a driver when the symptom is tied to Bluetooth, printers, USB devices, or device pairing. A driver update is not a substitute for DISM and SFC when Windows itself reports the missing component.
What if every application starts showing DLL errors?
Treat that as a broader Windows or system-health problem. Check for malware, disk corruption, failing storage, and component-store damage, then use Windows recovery options rather than replacing DLLs individually.
