devicemetadataparsers.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component, not a Visual C++ or DirectX runtime. When Windows says it is missing, cannot be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair Windows itself before downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The file is described as Common Device Metadata parsers. It is associated with Windows device metadata and device-installation functions, which help Windows process information about connected hardware.

Public Windows file inventories identify the DLL in Windows 7 and Windows 8 system files. Reported locations include:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64for 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows
Those public records do not establish a complete file-version or package matrix for every Windows 10 and Windows 11 build. Do not assume that every current installation should contain the same file, version, size, or architecture.

Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because devicemetadataparsers.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading devicemetadataparsers.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because devicemetadataparsers.dll was not found.”
- “devicemetadataparsers.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot find devicemetadataparsers.dll.”
The wording matters. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency loaded by the named DLL is missing, not necessarily that the named file itself has disappeared.
Cause-by-symptom guide
| What you observe | Most likely direction | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Several Windows functions or device installations fail | Damaged or deleted protected Windows file | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The problem began after an update or restart | Failed servicing operation | Install updates, then run DISM and SFC |
| Defender recently detected or quarantined a file | Antivirus quarantine | Check Protection history |
| Only one old program reports the error | Application-specific installation problem | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The message says “not designed to run on Windows” | Wrong, damaged, or mismatched DLL | Remove the copied file and repair Windows |
| The message appears after a driver change | Driver or Windows servicing issue | Repair Windows first, then update the driver |
| The error returns after every repair | Deeper storage, malware, or servicing problem | Review logs, drive health, and recovery options |
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A pending update or interrupted servicing operation can leave Windows components incomplete.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Select Download & install for any available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Repeat the check until no additional updates are offered.
- Test the device installation or program that produced the error.
If the message remains, continue with the system-file repair below. Do not repeatedly reinstall random drivers before checking Windows component integrity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest general fix when the DLL is missing, corrupted, or incorrectly replaced. DISM repairs the Windows component store first. SFC then uses that repaired store to check and replace protected system files.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Repeat the operation that originally produced the error.
A successful SFC result says that Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart and run the DISM command again, followed by SFC. If the issue persists, inspect:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
If DISM cannot obtain repair files, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must closely match the installed Windows edition, release, and architecture. A mismatched source can fail or repair the wrong component set.
Manually copying devicemetadataparsers.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 is not an equivalent repair. It can create wrong-version, wrong-architecture, permission, and component-store problems.
If you want a guided way to identify common Windows repair issues instead of repeatedly guessing through DISM and SFC results, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the correct repair path for this component.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus action is another possible explanation, especially if the error appeared after a security scan or cleanup.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and quarantined items.
- Expand an entry that identifies the DLL or a related Windows component.
- Confirm the file path and detection details before taking action.
If Defender clearly quarantined a genuine Windows file and you have strong evidence that it belongs to the current installation, use Restore. Then run a full Defender scan and run DISM followed by SFC.

If the detection identifies malware rather than a Windows component, leave it quarantined, complete a full scan, and investigate the infection before attempting to restore anything.

Fix 4: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, application installation, or other system change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the affected software and updates.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can remove programs, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Restore points may be unavailable if System Protection was disabled.

Fix 5: Repair the affected application if only one program fails
If Windows operates normally and only one old program reports devicemetadataparsers.dll, the application may be making a faulty dependency check or may have its own damaged installation.
First determine whether the error appears outside that program:
- Can Windows install or recognize devices normally?
- Does Device Manager open?
- Do other applications start?
- Does the error appear only when launching one program?
If only one application fails:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the application and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. Use the current installer intended for your Windows architecture. Back up application settings or saved data first if the program stores them locally.

A program-specific reinstall is the definitive fix when the program itself owns the damaged files. It does not justify downloading a Windows DLL from an unofficial source.
Fix 6: Check architecture and file location
Windows has separate conventions for 32-bit and 64-bit components:
C:WindowsSystem32is the normal system directory for native system components.C:WindowsSysWOW64contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.
Public inventories list 32-bit records for this filename, but they do not provide a complete architecture matrix for every Windows release. Never select a replacement solely because its filename matches.
If you find a manually copied file in an application folder, remove it only if you know it was added as an attempted repair and the application’s official installer did not place it there. Then run DISM and SFC. Do not move DLLs between System32, SysWOW64, and application folders as a diagnostic experiment.
Fix 7: Update a related driver only after Windows repair
A device or driver change may have exposed the problem, but reinstalling a driver will not normally restore a protected Windows DLL unless the driver package was the actual owner.
Use Windows’ own driver tools first:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver and select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the device.
For a driver installed immediately before the failure, select Roll Back Driver if the option is available. If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain it from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.

If identifying which of several device drivers is stale is taking repeated manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues; its free scan identifies findings, while installation is handled by the full version. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is commonly used with certain self-registering COM components.
Recommended Free Tools
A Windows parser or protected system component should not be registered merely because it is missing. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 devicemetadataparsers.dll
may produce an entry-point error and will not restore a missing file, repair the component store, or fix a missing dependency. Use DISM and SFC instead.
Do not download the DLL from random websites
Standalone DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A modified or malicious file
- Incorrect permissions or signing
- A file that does not match the component store
- A replacement that hides the real disk, update, or application problem
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, System Restore, Windows recovery tools, and the official installer for the affected application or device manufacturer. Microsoft does not publish a general recommendation to replace this file by downloading a loose DLL.
When Windows repair is not enough
If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail or the error keeps returning, collect these details:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Windows edition and build
- The complete error message
- The affected program or device
- The reported file path
- The result shown by DISM
- The result shown by SFC
- Relevant entries from
CBS.log - Defender Protection history
- Any recent update, cleanup, driver, or repair event
Also check drive health and back up personal files. Persistent corruption can indicate storage failure, a damaged Windows image, malware, or an interrupted servicing process. An in-place Windows repair may preserve files and applications while replacing damaged Windows components. A clean reset should be considered only after backup and after less destructive recovery options have been exhausted.
FAQ
Is devicemetadataparsers.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is identified as Common Device Metadata parsers, a Microsoft Windows component. Public file records specifically document Windows 7 and Windows 8, while complete current Windows 10 and Windows 11 package details are not publicly established here.
Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
No. Errors naming vcruntime, msvcp, or similar runtime files point toward Visual C++ troubleshooting. This filename is associated with Windows device metadata instead.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Manual copying can create architecture, version, permissions, and component-store mismatches. Run DISM and SFC, or repair the affected application from its official installer.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does “module could not be found” prove the DLL is missing?
No. A dependency loaded by the DLL may be missing. Windows servicing and application repair are safer than replacing the named file blindly.
Will reinstalling a driver fix it?
Only if the driver package was the actual source of the failure. Driver reinstall is secondary; repair Windows first and check whether the problem affects Windows broadly or only one application.
What should I do if the error appears in only one old program?
Repair or reinstall that program from its official source. If Windows and other applications work normally, the application installation is more likely to be the relevant repair target.
