devpropmgr.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, not a normal game runtime. If Windows says it is missing, not found, corrupted, or unable to load, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement file.
The safest repair sequence is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Run both commands from an elevated Command Prompt, in that order. Restart Windows when they finish.

What is devpropmgr.dll?
devpropmgr.dll is associated with Microsoft Windows Device Property Manager, a Windows component involved in device-property handling. Public file metadata identifies Microsoft Corporation as the publisher and records the original filename as DevPropMgr.DLL.

A normal 64-bit Windows installation generally stores the file here:

C:WindowsSystem32DevPropMgr.dll
Public records show examples from several Windows generations, including 64-bit version 10.0.10586.0, 10.0.14393.0, and later 10.0.19041.1 metadata. Those are examples, not universal requirements. The correct version, size, hash, path, and architecture depend on your Windows edition, build, servicing level, and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
The file’s public export list includes DllGetClassObject and DllCanUnloadNow, but not DllRegisterServer. That distinction matters because it means regsvr32 is not the normal repair method.
Errors caused by devpropmgr.dll
The wording depends on the application, Windows build, and loader context. You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because devpropmgr.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading devpropmgr.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because devpropmgr.dll was not found.”
- “devpropmgr.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library devpropmgr.dll.”
- “Cannot register devpropmgr.dll.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that devpropmgr.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing, damaged, or the wrong architecture.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes, depending on Windows Update and disk speed.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies clean versions of protected system files. SFC then checks protected files and replaces damaged or missing copies.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait until DISM reaches completion. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Launch the program that produced the error again.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or could not repair some files. If it repaired files, restart before testing the application.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, try Windows Update first. Make sure the computer is online, install pending updates, restart, and repeat the DISM and SFC sequence.
For repeated manual repairs, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention instead of making you repeat SFC and DISM without knowing what changed. Its free scan identifies issues, while repair features require the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the definitive repair path.
Check the SFC result
To save the relevant SFC entries to your desktop:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt and look for entries mentioning repair failures or files that could not be restored. If SFC repeatedly reports corruption, continue with the repair-source and disk checks below.
Fix 2: Check whether the file exists in the Windows directory
Time needed: 2–5 minutes.
Use these commands from Command Prompt:
where devpropmgr.dll
dir "%windir%System32devpropmgr.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64devpropmgr.dll"
System32 is normally the expected location for the 64-bit copy on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 can contain 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows. The directory names are confusing, so do not choose a replacement manually based only on the folder name.

If the expected Windows copy is missing, return to DISM and SFC. Do not copy a file from another PC unless you are performing an advanced, documented recovery with a known-good file that exactly matches the installed Windows architecture and build.
Fix 3: Verify the file’s signature and properties
Time needed: 5 minutes.
PowerShell can show whether the Windows-directory copy has a valid Authenticode signature:
- Open Start.
- Search for PowerShell.
- Open Windows PowerShell.
- Run:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32DevPropMgr.dll"
You can also inspect its location, size, and version:
Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32DevPropMgr.dll" |
Select-Object FullName,Length,VersionInfo
A legitimate copy should identify Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Corporation in its signature information. A valid signature is useful evidence, but it is not an absolute malware guarantee.
A file with the same name outside the Windows directory deserves additional investigation. Do not delete or restore files blindly while an antivirus alert is active.
Fix 4: Review Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Security software can quarantine or remove a damaged-looking system file. Check whether that explains why the error appeared.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
DevPropMgr.dllor the Windows directory. - Open the detection details and check the original file path, threat name, and action taken.
- Run an updated Microsoft Defender scan.
Only consider restoring a quarantined file if the original path was the Windows directory, the detection is clearly a false positive, and the security software confirms the file’s details. If Windows Security cannot restore the original, use DISM and SFC instead.
Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion for System32, and do not restore a downloaded copy to replace a quarantined file.
If you suspect malware, run a full scan and, where appropriate, Microsoft Defender Offline. A recurring disappearance after repair can indicate malware, a cleanup utility, incorrect permissions, or disk damage.
Fix 5: Install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 15–60 minutes, plus restart time.
An interrupted or rolled-back update can leave the component store inconsistent.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the DLL error remains.
To investigate a recent change, open Settings → Windows Update → Update history. If the problem started immediately after a failed update, use the recovery options Windows provides rather than removing random files from the servicing directories.

On supported Windows 11 systems, Windows can reinstall the current version while retaining apps, files, and settings:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This is a stronger repair than copying one DLL because it refreshes Windows components together.
Fix 6: Repair the application that reports the error
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
If only one game or application shows the message while Windows features and other programs work normally, the application may be loading an incorrect private copy or reporting a missing dependency.
First identify the program in the error window. Then use its official repair option:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Close the program and its launcher.
- Open the launcher or application manager.
- Find the installed game or program.
- Open its menu or settings.
- Choose Repair, Verify, Verify integrity of game files, or the equivalent option.
- Let the scan replace damaged application files.
- Restart the launcher and test the program.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the affected program from Settings → Apps → Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or launcher.
Do not assume Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore devpropmgr.dll. This filename is associated with Windows itself, so reinstalling a common runtime is not the direct fix unless the application separately reports a runtime dependency.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall device drivers when hardware is also failing
Time needed: 15–45 minutes.
Driver problems do not normally replace a missing Windows system DLL, but they can expose device-property failures at the same time. Use this step when Device Manager, hardware detection, or a recent graphics, chipset, or peripheral update is involved.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing device.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for a device status code.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver when the problem began after a recent driver change.
- Restart Windows and test again.
For graphics and chipset hardware, obtain drivers from the PC, motherboard, or GPU manufacturer’s official support page. Match the driver to Windows and the correct 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.

Time needed: 30–90 minutes.
If DISM cannot find repair files through Windows Update, use genuine Windows installation media that matches the installed Windows generation, edition, language, and architecture as closely as practical.
After mounting a matching ISO, identify its repair source and run a command like:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the matching Windows source. The /LimitAccess switch prevents DISM from trying Windows Update and forces it to use the specified source.

When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the failing program. If the component store remains unrecoverable, perform an in-place repair installation using official Windows media and choose the option to preserve personal files and apps when it is offered.
Fix 9: Check the file system
Time needed: 5–60 minutes.
Repeated corruption can come from storage or file-system problems.
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
chkdsk /scan
This performs an online scan. If Windows reports errors that require correction, use:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may schedule the repair for the next restart. Save your work before rebooting. If the disk continues producing corrupted files, back up important data and investigate the drive’s health before performing repeated repairs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy downloading devpropmgr.dll is unsafe
Do not start by downloading a DLL from a random file repository or copying it into System32. That approach can introduce:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A version that does not match your Windows build
- Missing exports or incompatible dependencies
- An invalid or altered signature
- Malware
- A file that bypasses Windows servicing
It also may not fix the real problem. The named DLL can exist while a dependency is missing, or the application may be loading a different copy.
There is no verified Microsoft standalone devpropmgr.dll installer or “Device Property Manager Redistributable.” Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows 11 repair reinstall, or official Windows 10 and Windows 11 installation media instead.

| Wrong copy outside Windows | Inspect the path and remove the application-side cause |
| Malware or tampering | Run Defender scans and repair Windows |
| Disk or file-system damage | Run chkdsk /scan and check storage health |
FAQ
Is devpropmgr.dll a virus?
A correctly located, Microsoft-signed copy is expected to be a legitimate Windows component. A copy in a game folder, Downloads, a temporary directory, or a user profile should be investigated rather than trusted automatically.
Should I register devpropmgr.dll with regsvr32?
No. The public export record does not list DllRegisterServer, so regsvr32 devpropmgr.dll is not a normal repair step and may report that the entry point was not found.
Should I copy the file from System32 to SysWOW64?
No. Windows manages architecture-specific system files. Use DISM and SFC instead of guessing which directory needs a copy.
What if the error says the module cannot be found?
Check dependencies and the application that produced the message. “Module” can refer to a dependency rather than the named devpropmgr.dll.
Will reinstalling a game fix it?
It can if only that game fails and its installation is damaged. If Device Manager, Windows features, or multiple applications also fail, repair Windows first.
What if nothing above works?
Use System Restore from Start → Create a restore point → System Restore and choose a restore point from before the error. If Windows remains damaged, use the supported Windows Update reinstall option or an in-place repair installation that preserves apps and files where available.
