“The program can’t start because wsservice.dll is missing from your computer.”
wsservice.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Windows Store Service, not a game DLL or a Visual C++ runtime.
The safest fix is to repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. A random copy can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, permissions, or malicious contents.

Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what you are seeing:
- Several Windows or Microsoft Store features fail: Repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- Only one Microsoft Store app fails: Repair, reset, update, or reinstall that app.
- The error appeared after antivirus action: Check Windows Security Protection History before restoring anything.
- The failure began after an update or system change: Try System Restore or remove the relevant update.
- A conventional desktop program reports the file: Repair that program, but remember that it may only be triggering a Windows Store or AppX dependency failure.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: The named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies cannot load.
- The error follows disk corruption or repeated SFC failures: Repair the Windows image, check storage health, and consider an in-place Windows repair.
wsservice.dll has historically shipped with Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10-era builds, and Windows Server releases. On supported systems it is normally a protected Windows file, commonly associated with C:WindowsSystem32WSService.dll. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system components may instead appear under C:WindowsSysWOW64. The exact location depends on the Windows release and servicing state.

1. Install Windows updates and restart
A servicing update may restore a missing component or replace a damaged copy with the correct version for your build.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on it.
- Try the affected app again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than copying a file from another PC. Windows Update can provide the component source that Windows repair tools need.
2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and replace protected system files. Running SFC first can leave it unable to repair the file if its source is also damaged.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after SFC completes.
- Test the Store app or program that produced the error.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error disappears, the protected Windows component was the problem.

If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart and run the two commands again. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with the actual repair source. It must match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. An incompatible source can create further servicing problems.
When repeatedly hunting through DISM output and SFC logs becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, but it is not required and Microsoft’s DISM/SFC procedure remains the primary fix for a Windows component.
3. Repair or reinstall the affected Store app
If Windows itself works normally and only one Store app fails, the app’s package registration or local data may be damaged. Replacing wsservice.dll will not repair that registration.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected app.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the app again.
Repair preserves the app’s data where possible. If it does not help, return to the same page and select Reset. Reset can remove the app’s local data and sign-in state.
Then update Store apps:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Choose Get updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows and test the app.
If the app still fails, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, then install it again from Microsoft Store. Use this route for Store applications rather than placing a DLL in the app’s installation folder.

A Store app can also be repaired from its own support options, depending on the Windows release. The relevant controls are generally Repair, Reset, and Uninstall under the app’s advanced settings.
4. Repair a conventional desktop program
A desktop game, launcher, utility, or installer may display the error even though it does not own wsservice.dll. It may be calling Windows Store or AppX infrastructure, which then fails to load the protected component.

This repairs application files but does not prove that the program supplied wsservice.dll.
For a Windows repair entry:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the program’s menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the program.
- Choose Repair or Change, then follow the installer.
If the program has no repair option, download its installer only from the software publisher’s official source and reinstall it. Do not replace a Windows system DLL with one bundled in an unrelated application.
5. Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
An antivirus product may quarantine a damaged, altered, or falsely detected system file. The error alone does not prove that the detection was false.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Inspect recent detections.
- Check the detected file’s path and reason.
- Run a Microsoft Defender scan if the event is unclear.
Restore a quarantined file only when its location, Microsoft signature, and Windows origin have been verified and the detection is demonstrably a false positive. If there is any doubt, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC. Microsoft warns that allowing a genuine threat can expose the device.
If the file appeared in a temporary folder, an application download folder, or a random archive rather than a normal Windows location, scan the system and investigate the parent program. A suspicious copy should not be treated as the legitimate Windows component.
6. Use System Restore after a recent change
If wsservice.dll worked until a recent update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or software change, System Restore can roll back system files and registry settings without normally removing personal files.

- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is most useful when the timing is clear and a suitable restore point exists. It does not replace ongoing Windows updates indefinitely. After recovery, install updates normally and test the affected app.
7. Consider Windows repair reinstall
On Windows 11, a supported repair reinstall may be available:

- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings according to Microsoft’s recovery procedure. Keep the computer connected to power and back up important data first.
If that option is unavailable or fails, use Microsoft’s recovery options and a matching Windows installation source. Persistent repair failures can indicate component-store damage, storage problems, or malware.
Do not download wsservice.dll from a DLL website
There is no Microsoft-supported standalone wsservice.dll redistributable. Downloading a DLL from a random repository is risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different Windows release, use the wrong architecture, or fail to repair the underlying component registration.
Do not copy an x86 file into a 64-bit Windows location, and do not substitute an x64 file for a 32-bit caller. A file version by itself is not a safe replacement criterion because Windows build, servicing state, architecture, ownership, and permissions all matter.

The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM using a matching installation source, SFC, Microsoft recovery tools, and an official Windows installation or repair process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does regsvr32 fix wsservice.dll?
Normally, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Although some WSService builds expose registration-related functions, manually registering this protected Windows service component is not a standard repair and can produce misleading errors.

Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 wsservice.dll
unless Microsoft support has given you a build-specific procedure for your installation. Repair the Windows component store instead.
What if a driver update caused the error?
Drivers are not the normal source of wsservice.dll, and installing a graphics or chipset driver is not a justified first repair. Consider drivers only when the error appeared alongside broader hardware, display, storage, or Windows Update failures.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a recently updated device, open Properties > Driver and use Roll Back Driver when available. Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page for a model-specific driver when Windows cannot find one.
Manually comparing driver versions across many devices is tedious, and an automated scan can identify stale drivers, but the full repair or driver installation in Outbyte Driver Updater requires its full version; it is optional and does not replace Windows servicing when wsservice.dll itself is corrupt.
What to record if the error continues
Before seeking further help, record:
- The complete error text.
- The executable named in the dialog.
- Whether one app or multiple Windows features fail.
- The file path shown by any security alert.
- Your Windows edition and architecture.
- The result of DISM.
- The result of
sfc /scannow. - Any related Protection History event.
- Whether the failure began after an update or software change.
This information distinguishes a damaged Windows component from a Store package problem, a quarantined file, a dependency failure, or a malfunctioning desktop program.
FAQ
Is wsservice.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is the Windows Store Service component from Microsoft Corporation and belongs to the Windows operating system. It supports Windows Store application infrastructure and is started on demand.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs wsservice.dll part of a game?
Usually not. A game or launcher may trigger the error while calling Windows Store or AppX infrastructure, but that does not mean the game owns the DLL.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this file specifically. Those packages are not the normal source of wsservice.dll. Install them only when the error names a corresponding runtime DLL.
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
The Windows loader may be unable to load a dependency of the named file. Check the full path, repair Windows with DISM and SFC, and identify the executable that called it.
Can I copy wsservice.dll from another computer?
Only as an advanced, Microsoft-supported recovery procedure using a known-good file from the same Windows build, architecture, and edition, with the documented ownership and permissions steps. It is not a routine fix.
