Dexed is worth considering if you want a software instrument built around Yamaha DX7-style FM synthesis and patch compatibility. It is a focused DX7 companion, not a general-purpose modern synth, and whether it fits your setup depends on the plugin format, host, or device you plan to use.
What Dexed is—and what “DX7 emulator” means here
The Dexed project describes the software as a multi-platform, multi-format synthesizer modeled closely on the Yamaha DX7. Its stated aim is to act as a tool or companion for the original instrument, with compatibility at the center rather than a broader redesign of FM synthesis. That makes “DX7-style software synth” a fair description; it does not establish that every feature or behavior is identical to a physical DX7.

The project says Dexed uses the music-synthesizer-for-android engine, with JUCE serving as the application and plugin wrapper. Dexed is licensed under GPL v3, while its msfa component is Apache 2.0. The project’s changelog includes work on interface scaling and CLAP fixes in version 1.0.1, as well as earlier changes to portamento, LFO behavior, MIDI channel handling, and SysEx patch requests. Those entries document development work, but do not promise a particular update schedule or support for every host. Dexed project repository

Is Dexed any good?
It is a plausible fit for a specific job: playing and working with DX7-oriented sounds in a software workflow. The strongest case is compatibility-minded use, especially if you already work with DX7 patches or want a plugin rather than a standalone keyboard. If you want a broad modern synth with a substantially different feature set, or an interface designed to feel exactly like hardware, check the current build and your intended host before committing to it.
#1 Best Overall
- Built for synthesists, the 61-key MODX M6 delivers exceptional sound, expressive control and optimized workflow in a lightweight design for stage or studio
- Exceptional Sound: 3 powerful engines recreate classic analog synths, modern FM synths, and realistic instruments for a variety of sounds
- Expressive Control: Intuitive performance controls, including 8 physical faders and Super Knob, give you real-time hands-on expression
- Optimized Workflow: Upgraded navigation enables quick, intuitive sound editing and operation with features like a color touch screen and 6 dedicated display knobs
- Improved Keyboard Action: 61 semi-weighted keys delivers faster, more substantial feeling synth action for improved playability when compared to MODX+
There is no representative critic consensus, controlled comparison with a hardware DX7, or independent performance benchmark established by the sources cited here. The project’s description supports its design goal, not a claim that it sounds indistinguishable from the original or outperforms competing instruments. The iOS App Store listing contains mixed user comments: some praise its sound or DX7 imitation, while others report difficulty with presets or interface navigation. Those reviews are anecdotal, not a representative sample or proof of a general defect. Apple App Store listing for Dexed Synth

Desktop plugin workflow
Dexed is presented by its project as a multi-format plugin, but the material cited here does not settle compatibility for every desktop DAW, operating system, or plugin-format combination. Check the current release’s available formats and your host’s plugin requirements before installing, then verify that the patch files and MIDI routing you need are supported in that setup. Do not assume the iOS app’s specific limitations apply to desktop.

iOS workflow
The iOS listing describes Dexed as an AUv3 instrument for hosts including AUM and GarageBand. It says the app can load `.syx` cartridge files and accept input from a MIDI controller connected through USB. The listing warns that SysEx handling varies by device, and says presets in the described workflow currently need to be saved through a DAW. These are iOS-specific qualifications; they should not be generalized to other versions of Dexed. Apple App Store listing for Dexed Synth

No. A MIDI keyboard is an optional way to play notes; the cited material does not identify a required controller model. On iOS, the listing describes USB MIDI controller input, with device-dependent SysEx behavior. A separate Raspberry Pi project called DreamDexed also documents MIDI-keyboard use and loading `.syx` voices, but it is a distinct implementation—not evidence about the desktop plugin’s requirements. How Dexed compares with a hardware DX7 or another FM synth
The useful comparison is workflow, not an unsupported winner-takes-all verdict. Dexed is software intended for a plugin or app environment; a hardware DX7 is a standalone instrument. Consider whether you need patch and SysEx compatibility, which host or device you will use, how you prefer to edit and perform, and whether a compatibility-focused DX7 tool is enough or you want a wider modern feature set. The available sources establish Dexed’s stated companion role, but do not provide controlled testing against hardware DX7s or competing FM instruments.
