Short answer
dgrpsetu.dll is associated with Digi International’s Digi RealPort Driver Upgrade and Setup Wizard. It is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, or Visual C++ redistributable.
If Windows says dgrpsetu.dll is missing, not found, corrupt, or unable to load, repair the Digi RealPort installation that owns it. Do not begin by copying a matching filename into System32 or SysWOW64.

| File | dgrpsetu.dll |
| Associated software | Digi RealPort Driver Upgrade / Setup Wizard |
| Category | Hardware and virtual serial-port driver package |

| Historical file details | Third-party catalogs report an older 32-bit file, but those details do not describe every current RealPort release |
The file is used with Digi networked serial products, including Digi Connect, ConnectPort, EtherLite, Digi One, PortServer, and related devices. Digi’s current RealPort package may have replaced or removed this older setup DLL, so an exact historical file match is not always the correct repair.

Common messages include “The program can’t start because dgrpsetu.dll is missing,” “The specified module could not be found,” and “dgrpsetu.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The last message does not necessarily mean that dgrpsetu.dll itself is the wrong file. Windows may be rejecting a damaged file, an incompatible 32-bit or 64-bit component, or a dependency required by the DLL.
Fix 1: Install or update RealPort from Digi
This is the safest and most likely solution when the computer still uses Digi hardware or virtual COM ports.
- Open Digi’s official RealPort support page in your browser.
- Open Product Resources and then Drivers & Patches.
- Select RealPort Driver.
- Choose the Windows package that matches your Windows version and system architecture.
- Download the ZIP file.
- Right-click the downloaded ZIP and select Extract All.
- Extract it to a local folder such as
DownloadsRealPort. - Do not run
setup.exefrom inside the compressed ZIP. - Open the extracted folder, right-click
setup.exe, and select Run as administrator. - If RealPort is already installed, choose Update Digi RealPort Software in the Setup Wizard. If it is not installed, choose the installation option appropriate for your Digi device.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
- Test the Digi application and any virtual COM port that depends on RealPort.
How to tell whether it worked
The error should stop appearing, the RealPort Setup Wizard should complete without requesting dgrpsetu.dll, and the Digi device should be available again. You can also check Device Manager for the expected Digi entry under Ports (COM & LPT) or another relevant device category.
If the installer reports that the file is still missing, delete the extracted package, download it again from Digi, extract it to a new local folder, and repeat the installation as administrator. Avoid running the installer from a mapped network drive or a partially extracted location.
If the current installer does not contain dgrpsetu.dll, do not add the old DLL manually. The message may be coming from an abandoned shortcut, cached installer, old uninstaller, or another program that still references a previous RealPort release.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined it
A security scan can remove a driver-package file. Check this before repeatedly reinstalling RealPort.

- Great for everyday use.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for
dgrpsetu.dll, RealPort, or the Digi installer. - Open a relevant entry and review its location and action.
- Restore or allow the file only when it came from the official Digi installer and its location is consistent with the RealPort installation.
- Run the Digi installer again using Run as administrator.
Do not restore a DLL simply because its filename matches. If the file came from an unknown download source, leave it quarantined and obtain a clean RealPort package from Digi instead.
If Windows Security repeatedly removes the official installer or its files, update Windows Security, rescan the extracted package, and contact Digi support before adding exclusions. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to force a DLL into place.
Fix 3: Check architecture and RealPort compatibility
A historical dgrpsetu.dll record may describe a 32-bit file, while the current driver package and Windows installation may use different components. Mixing files from separate RealPort releases can produce “not designed to run on Windows” or dependency errors.
First check Windows:
- Press Win + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type under Device specifications.
Then return to Digi’s RealPort download page and use its Windows selection to obtain the appropriate package. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit driver package, and do not combine files from an older archive with a newer installer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Digi’s current Windows documentation supports modern Windows client and server releases, but that does not mean every legacy RealPort installer supports Windows 10 or Windows 11. Use the current package where possible. If your Digi hardware requires an older release, verify compatibility with Digi rather than guessing from the filename.
Repair the RealPort device entry
If RealPort is installed but the virtual COM port is broken:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Ports (COM & LPT).
- Look for a Digi RealPort entry or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- On the Driver tab, try Update Driver if a correct package is available.
- If the failure began after a recent update, try Roll Back Driver when that button is available.
- If the entry is clearly stale, choose Uninstall Device, restart Windows, and run the official RealPort installer again.
Do not uninstall an active Digi port while critical equipment or applications depend on it. Record the COM port assignment first if a production application expects a specific port number.

When checking many installed devices and driver versions by hand becomes guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the problem, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the official Digi RealPort package remains the correct source for this specific driver.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the DLL exists but Windows reports that it is corrupt, cannot load it, or cannot load a required module. They repair protected Windows components and dependencies. They are not guaranteed to recreate a missing third-party Digi DLL.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. This can take time.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
- Run the Digi RealPort installer again.
If DISM reports that the operation completed successfully and SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test RealPort again. If SFC reports that it could not fix some files, restart and run the scan once more. If the same RealPort error remains, return to the Digi installer rather than expecting SFC to supply dgrpsetu.dll.
Repeating repair scans without knowing what changed is tedious and does not replace repairing the owning driver package. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that identifies system issues; the free scan shows what it finds, while automated repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it cannot substitute for reinstalling RealPort when the vendor file itself is missing.
Fix 5: Remove stale startup references
If the message appears every time Windows starts, the active RealPort driver may not be the cause. An old installer or updater may be launching automatically.
Check these locations:
- Open Settings with Win + I.
- Select Apps, then Startup.
- Disable an obsolete Digi updater or RealPort setup entry if you recognize it and RealPort is already repaired.
- Press Win + R, enter
taskschd.msc, and press Enter. - Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks related to Digi or an old RealPort installer.
- Open a task’s Actions tab before disabling it.
- Disable only a clearly obsolete entry that points to a missing installer or removed RealPort directory.
Also check Settings → Apps → Installed apps for duplicate or abandoned Digi entries. Do not delete random startup items or scheduled tasks solely because they contain a DLL name.
Fix 6: Uninstall RealPort if the hardware is no longer used
If the computer no longer connects to Digi hardware or applications that require Digi virtual COM ports, removing RealPort is safer than trying to preserve an obsolete installation.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Digi RealPort.
- Select the menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard and restart Windows.
On older Windows installations, open Control Panel → Programs and Features, select the Digi RealPort entry, and choose Uninstall.
If an uninstall error asks for dgrpsetu.dll, obtain the matching RealPort installer from Digi and run its removal or update process. Do not download the DLL separately. If the program no longer appears in the installed-program list but the error continues, inspect Startup apps and Task Scheduler for the stale reference described above.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after a driver installation, RealPort update, or system rollback and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Win + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore may reverse a recent driver change, but it is not a replacement for installing the correct current Digi package.
What not to do
Do not copy the file to System32 or SysWOW64
Windows loads application and driver DLLs according to the owning program’s search path and dependency rules. A DLL placed in a system directory may be ignored, load with the wrong dependency set, or create a separate compatibility problem.
Do not use random DLL download sites
A matching filename does not establish the correct version, architecture, dependencies, provenance, or safety of a file. A manually downloaded DLL often leaves the damaged RealPort installation untouched and can introduce a different problem.

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 applies to self-registering COM or OLE DLLs that expose a DllRegisterServer entry point. dgrpsetu.dll is associated with a driver setup package, not proven to be a self-registering COM component. Registering it is therefore not a standard fix and can produce another error.
Do not assume Windows Update supplies this file
Windows Update can help with operating-system and driver compatibility, but there is no evidence that it distributes dgrpsetu.dll. Use Windows Update as general maintenance, not as the source for this particular Digi file.

FAQ
Is dgrpsetu.dll legitimate?
It is a legitimate file associated with Digi RealPort software. Historical third-party catalogs identify it as part of the Digi RealPort Driver Upgrade program. Verify the file’s location, installer source, and digital signature before restoring a quarantined copy.
Is it part of Windows?
No. It is not a Windows system component or Microsoft runtime.
Which program installed it?
Digi RealPort, specifically its driver upgrade or setup process, is the primary association. The exact current package that installed a copy can vary, especially on systems upgraded from an older RealPort release.
Should I use SFC or DISM first?
Use the official RealPort repair first when the message clearly appears during Digi installation or configuration. Use DISM followed by SFC when Windows components or DLL dependencies may also be damaged.
Does regsvr32 dgrpsetu.dll fix the error?
Normally, no. The command is not a general-purpose DLL repair and is not appropriate unless the vendor specifically documents that this DLL must be registered.

What if reinstalling RealPort does not work?
Check quarantine history, confirm the Windows architecture, remove stale RealPort entries, inspect Device Manager, and look for an obsolete startup or scheduled-task reference. Note the exact error, Digi device model, Windows version, RealPort version, and whether antivirus quarantined anything before contacting Digi.
Can I uninstall RealPort?
Yes, if no Digi hardware or virtual COM-port application remains in use. Uninstall it from Installed apps or Programs and Features rather than deleting its DLLs manually.
