dhcpsoc.dll is a Microsoft Windows DLL associated with the DHCP Server optional component installer. If dhcpsoc.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Before changing anything, note:

  • Which program displays the error
  • Whether it appears at startup, during Windows feature installation, or when launching one application
  • The exact path shown in the message, if any
  • Whether the computer runs 32-bit or 64-bit Windows
  • Whether the issue began after malware removal, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, Windows Update, migration, or an interrupted installation
  • Whether the error affects Windows generally or only one program

Common loader messages include:

  • “The program can’t start because dhcpsoc.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because dhcpsoc.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading dhcpsoc.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “dhcpsoc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These are standard Windows loader patterns. They do not prove that a particular game or application normally uses this file.

What dhcpsoc.dll belongs to

Microsoft documents dhcpsoc.dll in connection with the DHCP Server optional component installer. On Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, the documented optional-component command name was DHCPServerCore.

Historical Windows file inventories show the file under:

C:WindowsSystem32

That location is the expected place to investigate on systems where the component is present. Do not assume that every current Windows release contains the same file, version, or architecture. Historical metadata identifies a Vista-era version as 6.0.6000.16386, but that is not a universal replacement version for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

This file is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, ordinary device-driver file, or general-purpose game dependency. There is also no verified consumer game or application that can be named as its normal caller. If only one old installer requests it, the installer may be defective or incorrectly treating an old Windows component as an application dependency.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest first repair when the error points to C:Windows, affects startup, or began after servicing trouble, malware cleanup, disk errors, or an interrupted update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install pending updates

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart the computer.

On Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update instead.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows after both commands complete.
  2. Try the affected program or repeat the action that produced the error.

Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source. The Microsoft system-file repair guidance explains the supported sequence.

A successful repair may report that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error disappears after the restart, no DLL download or manual registration is needed.

For a targeted check, run this from an elevated Command Prompt:

sfc /scanfile=%windir%System32dhcpsoc.dll

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use matching Windows installation media or another matching repair source:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace the example path with the actual Windows source. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build. Microsoft describes the requirements in its DISM image-repair documentation.

Running DISM and SFC repeatedly without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting needlessly slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the issue and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by the full version; Windows servicing remains the primary fix for this Microsoft component.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Malware removal or a false-positive detection can remove a legitimate system file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Choose Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Expand any item that refers to dhcpsoc.dll.
  7. Check its path, publisher, and detection details before taking action.

Restore a quarantined file only when its path is a normal Windows location and you have confirmed that the detection is a false positive. Do not restore an identically named file from an application folder without investigating that application separately.

Do not turn off antivirus protection to force a DLL into System32. Microsoft notes in its Protection History guidance that a restored item may be detected again unless it is explicitly allowed.

After a legitimate restore, run DISM and SFC again. Windows may replace the file from its trusted component store, avoiding reliance on the quarantined copy.

If the error began after malware removal and the original file path no longer exists, also inspect startup entries and services. An orphaned startup item may still be trying to launch a removed program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Determine whether one application is the caller

The error may not be a Windows-wide failure.

When the message appears only while launching one program:

  1. Right-click the program’s shortcut.
  2. Select Open file location.
  3. Check whether the error names a path inside that program’s installation folder.
  4. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  5. Select the affected application.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Try Repair first.
  8. If Repair does not help, choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
  9. Otherwise uninstall the program.
  10. Restart Windows.
  11. Reinstall it using the developer’s original installer or supported launcher.

For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-integrity command before reinstalling the entire game.

If the program’s installer alone requests dhcpsoc.dll, contact the application developer or obtain a newer installer. Do not copy a Windows DLL into the application directory unless the developer explicitly provides that exact file for that exact build.

A program that says “specified module could not be found” may actually be missing a dependency required by dhcpsoc.dll. The named DLL can exist while another dependency is absent. That is one reason manual copying often fails.

Fix 4: Check the Windows optional component

This step mainly applies to older systems or a computer that genuinely needs the DHCP Server role. It is not a general replacement for DISM and SFC on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

On Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, Microsoft documented:

start /w ocsetup DHCPServerCore

Run it only on an operating system that supports Ocsetup.exe, and only when the DHCP Server optional component is required.

On supported modern Windows Server installations:

  1. Open Server Manager.
  2. Select Manage > Add Roles and Features.
  3. Continue through the wizard to Server Roles.
  4. Select DHCP Server.
  5. Add the management tools when prompted.
  6. Complete the installation.
  7. Restart if Windows requests it.

PowerShell can install the role with:

Install-WindowsFeature DHCP -IncludeManagementTools

Microsoft’s DHCP Server installation guide covers the supported Server workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse the DHCP Server role with the ordinary DHCP Client service used by Windows computers to obtain an IP address. Reinstalling a network adapter or restarting the DHCP Client service does not normally restore this DLL.

Fix 5: Check architecture and file location

Windows has separate locations and binaries for different architectures.

  • System32 contains the native system files for the installed Windows architecture.
  • SysWOW64 is used for many 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.
  • An application folder may contain private files used only by that program.

Do not infer that a file is correct merely because its filename matches. A copy from another Windows build, language, or architecture can cause:

  • “Bad image” errors
  • Entry-point errors
  • Immediate application crashes
  • Continued “module not found” messages

If the file exists, right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when available. Also check whether the error points to the Windows directory or to an application directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use DISM, SFC, or matching installation media to obtain the correct system copy. Do not replace it with a file labelled “latest” on an unofficial index. Historical version information is not a current compatibility guarantee.

Fix 6: Use System Restore or Windows recovery

If the problem started immediately after an update, cleanup operation, driver installation, or software installation, System Restore may return the component and related configuration to an earlier state.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point created before the error began.
  3. Choose Scan for affected programs.
  4. Review the changes.
  5. Complete the restore and restart.

System Restore does not remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed programs, updates, or drivers. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.

If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, use an in-place reinstall with matching Windows installation media. On Windows 11, the available Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now option can reinstall Windows components while preserving personal files and applications, subject to the choices shown on that computer. Review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options before proceeding.

What not to do

Do not download dhcpsoc.dll from a random DLL website. The replacement may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, lack a valid signature, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency.

There is no official standalone Microsoft redistributable for this DLL. Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET packages do not supply it, so reinstalling those runtimes is not a first-line repair unless the error names one of their own files.

Do not use regsvr32 as a default fix. It is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; no supported registration procedure has been established for dhcpsoc.dll.

Updating drivers

Driver reinstallation is not a direct repair for this DLL. Consider it only if there is a separate network-adapter, DHCP connectivity, or device problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check drivers manually:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the affected adapter.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if prompted.

For a clean reinstall, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the driver supplied by the computer or adapter manufacturer. Do not remove a working adapter solely because dhcpsoc.dll is missing.

Hunting through several hardware models and driver packages can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it only as an optional convenience, not as a substitute for repairing Windows or the application that reports the error.

FAQ

Is dhcpsoc.dll safe?

A genuine Microsoft copy in the expected Windows location can be legitimate. The filename alone does not establish safety. Check the path, digital signature, and antivirus detection before restoring or replacing it.

Does dhcpsoc.dll belong to DHCP Server?

Microsoft associates it with the DHCP Server optional component installer. That is different from the DHCP Client service used by ordinary Windows PCs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy it into System32?

No. Manual copying can introduce an incompatible build, wrong architecture, invalid signature, or malware. Use DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or the relevant Windows Server role installation.

Why does the message say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?

Windows may be unable to load a dependency of dhcpsoc.dll. The named file can be present while another required module is missing or incompatible.

What if only one old installer reports the error?

The installer may be obsolete or incorrectly declaring a Windows component as an application dependency. Repair or replace the installer through its developer rather than downloading the DLL separately.

Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?

Not normally. Those packages do not provide dhcpsoc.dll. Repair Windows first and investigate the specific program only if the error is limited to that program.
