What the authfwwizfwk.dll error means
Windows loader messages can appear in several forms:
- “The program can’t start because AuthFWWizFwk.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “AuthFWWizFwk.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading AuthFWWizFwk.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file AuthFWWizFwk.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “AuthFWWizFwk.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are common Windows loader variants, not proof that one particular application owns the file.

The problem can follow an incomplete Windows update, interrupted shutdown, disk corruption, antivirus quarantine, damaged component-store files, cleanup software, malware, or a mismatched system file. “The specified module could not be found” can also indicate a missing dependency even when the named DLL is present.
Check the expected file locations
Open File Explorer and check both paths:
%WINDIR%System32AuthFWWizFwk.dll
%WINDIR%SysWOW64AuthFWWizFwk.dll
On 64-bit Windows, the names are counterintuitive:
System32contains native 64-bit system files.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system files.
Do not copy a file from one folder to the other merely because one path is missing. Windows uses file-system redirection, and the correct location depends on the process that loads the component.
If the file exists, right-click it, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. A legitimate copy should carry a Microsoft signature. A valid signature supports authenticity, but it does not prove that the file is healthy or that every same-named file is legitimate. Check the path as well. A copy in a temporary folder, a download folder, or an unusual application directory deserves further investigation.
Fix 1: Complete Windows Update
Servicing problems are a common reason for protected Windows files to disappear or become inconsistent.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if an update does not explicitly request it.
- Try the program or Windows Firewall console again.
If Windows Update fails, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance, then continue with DISM and SFC below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most important repair sequence for authfwwizfwk.dll.
Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the command to finish. It may remain at one percentage for several minutes. Do not close the window while it is running.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
DISM repairs the Windows component store and can obtain replacement files through Windows Update. If it reports that the operation completed successfully, continue with SFC.
Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Test the original program and, if relevant, open the Firewall console with:
wf.msc
If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat sfc /scannow. Microsoft’s system file repair instructions document this repair order.
If manually repeating DISM and SFC leaves you guessing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problems and show what needs attention; its repair actions require the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
Use matching installation media if DISM cannot find repair files
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a repair source from matching Windows installation media:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual Windows folder in your repair source. The source should match the installed Windows version and edition closely. Using an unrelated image can create a different servicing problem. Microsoft explains this process in its Windows image repair documentation.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
An antivirus product can remove or quarantine a system file after a detection or false positive.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions for
AuthFWWizFwk.dll. - Check the reported path and detection details.
Do not automatically restore the file. Restore it only if it is in a normal Windows directory and its Microsoft signature is valid. Microsoft warns that allowing an incorrectly identified file can expose the device. If malware is possible, run a full scan. Use Microsoft Defender Offline when you suspect malware is active or has interfered with Windows files. See Microsoft’s Protection history guidance and Defender scanning guidance.
After dealing with quarantine, run DISM and SFC again. A restored file may still be damaged or may have been removed for a valid security reason.
Fix 4: Check the disk after crashes or forced shutdowns
Disk or file-system corruption can repeatedly damage protected files.
First back up important data. Then open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may say the drive is in use and ask whether to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y, press Enter, and restart.
After CHKDSK completes, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Use this path when the error began after repeated crashes, power loss, an interrupted shutdown, or recurring SFC corruption.
Fix 5: Test Windows Firewall directly
If the error appears while opening firewall tools:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
wf.msc
- Press Enter.
You can also open Settings → Privacy & security → Windows Security → Firewall & network protection on Windows 11, or the corresponding Windows Security area on Windows 10.
If these tools fail while unrelated applications work, the issue is more likely connected to Windows Firewall components. Do not remove or replace individual DLLs. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead. Microsoft documents firewall administration through Windows Firewall configuration tools.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Use System Restore when the problem started immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change.
- Press the Start button.
- Type Control Panel and open it.
- Select Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally affects system files, registry settings, and installed programs rather than personal documents. Microsoft provides more detail in its System Restore guidance.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A driver is not the usual cause of a missing Windows DLL, but crashes, storage-controller problems, or security software conflicts can damage system files. Do not update every driver randomly.
Check the relevant hardware in Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Storage controllers, Disk drives, Network adapters, and System devices.
- Right-click a device showing a warning icon.
- Select Properties → Driver.
- Note the provider and version.
- Use Update Driver, or download the driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and repeat DISM and SFC if the problem continues.
The free scan from Outbyte Driver Updater can identify stale drivers instead of making you hunt through Device Manager; installing drivers through the full version is optional, and a driver update is not a substitute for repairing Windows components.

Do not download the DLL from a random site
A downloaded DLL can contain malware, have the wrong version, use the wrong architecture, or satisfy the filename while leaving the damaged Windows component store untouched. It can also create a mismatch between related Firewall files.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching Microsoft installation media, System Restore, or a Windows repair installation instead. There is no verified official Microsoft standalone download page for authfwwizfwk.dll.
Do not run regsvr32 automatically
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A missing or corrupted Windows framework DLL should not be registered manually. Running:
regsvr32 AuthFWWizFwk.dll
may produce a “DllRegisterServer was not found” error and will not repair the Windows component.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET because of this filename alone
There is no evidence that AuthFWWizFwk.dll belongs to those redistributables. Install a runtime only when the affected program identifies that runtime as its dependency.
Do not copy a DLL from another PC as a first step
A replacement from another computer must come from the same Windows version and should still be followed by proper component repair. DISM, SFC, and matching installation media are safer.
FAQ
Is authfwwizfwk.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Windows Firewall. A copy with the same name in an unusual folder, without a valid Microsoft signature, or flagged by Defender requires investigation.
Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
No. The filename does not identify either runtime, and installing those packages is not a justified first repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich program installed authfwwizfwk.dll?
Public evidence does not identify one specific game or application that reliably requires it. The error may appear when Windows Firewall tools, administrative consoles, or another Windows component loads the Firewall framework.
Should I place the file in System32?
No, not by itself. The correct file must match Windows and the process architecture. Repair the protected Windows files with DISM and SFC instead.
What if SFC and DISM both fail?
Record the exact messages, Windows edition and build, file path, and whether wf.msc opens. Check Windows Update, inspect Defender Protection history, run CHKDSK when appropriate, and try System Restore. If repair commands still cannot restore Windows components, use a Windows repair installation or reinstall Windows using Microsoft media.
