Disabling DirectStorage can reduce traversal hitches or audio stutter for some Diablo IV PC players, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Blizzard acknowledged DirectStorage-related performance concerns in patch 2.2.2 on May 27, 2025, and documented -enableds for re-enabling the feature on supported NVMe drives. Community troubleshooting reports also recommend testing -disableds.
Because later patch notes do not document a definitive DirectStorage resolution or confirm the current default in every build, treat this as a controlled diagnostic test—not a universal performance tweak. Shader compilation, memory pressure, drivers, and network problems can produce similar symptoms.

The quick DirectStorage stutter test
To test the community-reported disabled path in Battle.net:
- Open Battle.net and select Diablo IV.
- Click the gear icon beside the Play button.
- Open Game Settings.
- Enable Additional command line arguments.
- Enter
-disableds. - Save the setting, then fully exit and relaunch Battle.net and Diablo IV.
Reproduce the same problem afterward—for example, ride through the area where you normally see hitching, teleport between zones, or continue playing until the audio stutter usually appears.

Blizzard’s official DirectStorage command
In the Diablo IV 2.2.2 patch notes, dated May 27, 2025, Blizzard said it was disabling the DirectStorage setting while investigating performance issues. The documented way to re-enable it was:
-enableds
Use the same Battle.net path—Diablo IV → gear icon → Game Settings → Additional command line arguments—then save and restart the game.

The latest patch-notes entry cited here lists version 3.1.2, Build #73020, July 28, 2026, but does not document a newer DirectStorage-specific resolution. That means the 2025 behavior should not automatically be treated as the current default for every September 2026 installation. Source: Blizzard’s later patch notes.
Why disabling DirectStorage might help
DirectStorage changes how game data is read from storage and submitted for processing. A particular combination of Diablo IV’s build, storage firmware, NVMe drive, chipset, CPU platform, graphics driver, or decompression path may respond poorly to that streaming path.
Disabling it can move asset loading back to the game’s conventional path and potentially avoid a specific streaming conflict. The likely benefit is smoother frame pacing during world or texture streaming—not a guaranteed increase in average FPS. The trade-off may be longer loading screens, slower area transitions, or greater CPU involvement.

Blizzard acknowledged performance concerns, but its patch notes did not identify one universal hardware cause. Community reports likewise show mixed results: some players improved, while others saw no difference.

Do not assume the command changed the active state. If available in your build, inspect a Diablo IV diagnostic or crash log for a line such as:
DirectStorage: Enabled
Log locations and formats can vary, so treat this as an optional diagnostic rather than a guaranteed supported interface. Community reports use this type of entry to check the state.
The more useful test is a before-and-after comparison:
- Use the same route, zone, teleport, or gameplay activity.
- Restart the game completely after changing the argument.
- Compare frame-time spikes, not only the average FPS counter.
- Repeat the route more than once to avoid judging one random hitch.
- Record loading time, traversal freezes, texture pop-in, audio crackling, and ordinary gameplay smoothness.
A meaningful result is a repeatable reduction in the same hitch after the restart. If nothing changes, DirectStorage may already be disabled, the argument may not be accepted by the current build, or another subsystem may be responsible.

You might instead see longer loading screens, slower transitions, no visible change, or a different kind of stutter. Do not judge the workaround by average FPS alone. DirectStorage troubleshooting is mainly about frame-time spikes and streaming behavior.
DirectStorage stutter versus shader stutter
DirectStorage and shader compilation are separate systems that can produce similar symptoms. Microsoft identifies shader compilation as a major cause of stutter in Direct3D 12 games and discusses precompiled shader delivery in its DirectX technical overview and 2026 Windows discussion.
| Symptom | More consistent with |
|---|---|
| Hitch when entering a new area or streaming assets | DirectStorage, disk I/O, memory, or asset streaming |
| Stutter during a new spell or visual effect that lessens after repetition | Shader compilation |
| Rubber-banding, delayed enemies, or teleport correction | Network or server latency |
| Stutter that worsens after a long session | Memory pressure, paging, thermals, or a background process |
| Low GPU utilization during severe frame-time spikes | CPU, storage, shader, or synchronization bottleneck |
| Stutter mainly while rapidly turning the camera or riding | Streaming, shader, VRAM, or CPU asset-processing load |
Disabling DirectStorage will not necessarily fix shader compilation. After a Diablo IV or GPU-driver update, the first session may stutter while shaders are rebuilt. Changing graphics settings, enabling ray tracing, or clearing a shader cache can have the same effect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChecks to perform before blaming DirectStorage
- Update Diablo IV through Battle.net.
- Restart Windows, not just the game.
- Use Battle.net’s scan or repair option to verify the game files.
- Check the GPU driver. Remember that a new driver can trigger shader-cache rebuilding.
- Confirm the game is installed on an SSD. Blizzard’s DirectStorage note specifically refers to supported NVMe drives.
- Monitor RAM, VRAM, and page-file activity while reproducing the hitch.
- Temporarily close browsers, overlays, recording software, RGB utilities, and hardware-monitoring tools.
- Disable ray tracing temporarily to separate rendering load from streaming problems.
- Cap FPS at a sensible level for the display instead of testing only uncapped.
- Check latency and rubber-banding before treating a network problem as a frame-rate problem.
Lowering every graphics setting does not isolate a storage or shader issue by itself. Use targeted changes and compare one variable at a time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the workaround is worth trying
Prioritize the test when stuttering occurs during area transitions, fast traversal, or asset streaming; when audio stutter is synchronized with brief freezes; when the problem began after a Diablo IV update; or when ordinary driver and file checks have not helped. It is also reasonable to test on newer platforms or unusual NVMe and firmware combinations, including high-end PCs that otherwise meet the game’s requirements.
It is probably not the answer when the issue is clearly network rubber-banding, first-time spell-effect stutter, sustained GPU saturation, severe RAM shortage or paging, alt-tab or overlay behavior, or a problem affecting every game and application.

Should DirectStorage stay disabled?
Keep the change only if repeated testing shows a clear improvement in hitching or frame-time consistency and the loading-time trade-off is acceptable. If the game is smooth, there is no general reason to disable DirectStorage. If -disableds makes no measurable difference, remove it. If -enableds makes the game worse, remove it and retest without a forced argument.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Re-test after major game or driver updates. New builds can change defaults, streaming behavior, and shader caches, so a workaround that helped previously may no longer be necessary.
Avoid risky “fixes”
Do not download replacement DirectStorage DLLs from unofficial mirrors, rename or replace game DLLs, edit Windows system files, delete arbitrary game files, disable security features, or change BIOS PCIe settings without a separate hardware diagnosis. Community posts describe DLL tactics, but they can create version, security, file-integrity, and patching problems. Use Battle.net’s launch arguments and file-repair tools first.
A new NVMe SSD is not a first-line fix for a healthy system. Moving the game can be reasonable if it is currently on a hard disk, a failing SSD, or a severely constrained drive, but storage hardware will not correct shader compilation, network latency, insufficient memory, driver conflicts, or a game-build regression.
If nothing fixes the stutter
Report a reproducible case to Blizzard with the Diablo IV build, Windows version, GPU and driver version, CPU, RAM and VRAM, NVMe model and firmware, whether -enableds or -disableds was present, the exact route that reproduces the hitch, and relevant logs. This information is more useful than reporting only that the game “feels laggy.”
