To add a socket in Diablo IV, visit a Jeweler in town, open the socketing service, select eligible gear, and confirm after checking the displayed cost. The Jeweler will not add sockets beyond that item slot’s limit. Blizzard’s version 2.0 notes say Scattered Prisms are required only when socketing Ancestral items; they do not drop before Torment difficulties.
How to add a socket
- Take the gear to a Jeweler in town.
- Open the socketing service and select the item. The interface shows whether another socket can be added and what the action costs.
- Check the displayed gold and material requirements, then confirm if you want to proceed. Blizzard’s version 2.0 notes specify the Scattered Prism rule for Ancestral items, but do not give a complete current cost schedule for every item type and quality.
- Put a compatible gem or rune in the socket. Before inserting one, check whether doing so will displace anything already fitted.

Maximums listed in Wowhead’s Season 12 gear guide are below. Treat the Jeweler’s item-specific display as the final check, since Blizzard’s cited sources do not provide a current slot-by-slot table.

Materials and progression
Blizzard’s version 2.0 patch notes say Scattered Prisms are required only to socket Ancestral items, and that Scattered Prisms do not drop before Torment difficulties. The notes also say the Jeweler is accessible at level 1 in version 2.0. Because exact costs may vary by item, use the in-game display rather than assuming a universal gold or material fee (Blizzard: Diablo IV Patch Notes (2.0)).

Blizzard’s version 2.0 notes say gems and runes can be swapped without visiting the Jeweler, and unsocketing no longer costs gold. They also describe these replacement behaviors:
