In Diablo IV Season 6 (Patch 2.0), target farming meant choosing the boss assigned to the specific Unique you wanted. Blizzard’s 2.0 PTR notes stated, “All Unique items now have a single boss for target farming.” This is a historical guide: later patches changed boss pools and rewards, so do not use Season 6 assignments as current-season advice without checking the live patch.
How Season 6 target farming worked
First identify the exact Unique you want, then use its Season 6 boss assignment to choose a target. The point was to focus runs on the assigned boss rather than treating every boss as an interchangeable Unique farm. Blizzard’s 2.0 PTR notes described the single-boss assignment rule and documented changes to selected boss pools.

The PTR notes are not a complete final Season 6 drop table. They show examples of pool changes, but do not establish every final live assignment, all summon-material costs, or comparative farming efficiency. For a particular item, confirm its mapping against the live Patch 2.0 information applicable to your play session rather than inferring an assignment from an item being removed from another boss.
What the Patch 2.0 notes changed
Blizzard’s PTR notes give several concrete examples of why the target boss mattered:
#1 Best Overall
- Grigoire: The Butcher’s Cleaver was added to Grigoire’s drops for Necromancers. The PTR notes also listed Ramaladni’s Magnum Opus and Ancients’ Oath (Barbarian), Mjölnic Ring (Druid), Blood Artisan’s Cuirass (Necromancer), Windforce (Rogue), and Gloves of the Illuminator (Sorcerer) as removed from Grigoire’s pool.
- Lord Zir: Mjölnic Ring moved from Grigoire to Lord Zir. The PTR notes also listed multiple removals from Zir’s pool, including Rage of Harrogath, Gohr’s Devastating Grips, Mad Wolf’s Glee, Vasily’s Prayer, Greatstaff of the Crone, Deathless Visage, Greaves of the Empty Tomb, Eyes in the Dark, Grasp of Shadow, Skyhunter, Iceheart Brais, Staff of Endless Rage, Raiment of the Infinite, Penitent Greaves, and The Butcher’s Cleaver.
- Beast in the Ice: The PTR notes listed removals including 100,000 Steps, Battle Trance, Fields of Crimson, Insatiable Fury, Hunter’s Zenith, Waxing Gibbous, Howl from Below, Deathspeaker’s Pendant, Bloodless Scream, Condemnation, Word of Hakan, Esu’s Heirloom, Staff of Lam Esen, Frostburn, and Mother’s Embrace.
These are PTR-noted changes, not full drop tables. A removal list alone does not tell you where every item could be targeted in the final live Season 6 build.
How to choose a Season 6 target
- Name the Unique. Decide which specific item you are seeking; class and item name matter because boss pools were adjusted by item.
- Check its Patch 2.0 boss assignment. Use information for Season 6, not a later season. Do not assume an old association is still valid after a pool change.
- Prepare for that boss using the relevant patch’s requirements. The cited 2.0 notes do not establish a complete list of summon materials or unlock costs, so verify those details from the applicable in-game or official information.
- Set a difficulty your character can clear reliably. The notes establish no measured efficiency figures or per-item drop probabilities, so there is no supported claim that a particular difficulty or route guarantees a faster result.
What Torment difficulty meant for drops
Under Blizzard’s Patch 2.0 notes, from Torment I onward only Legendary and Unique items could drop. Normal, Magic, and Rare items that otherwise would have dropped were converted into their corresponding materials. This was a Patch 2.0 rule, not a universal statement about later versions. See the official Patch 2.0 notes.

Target farming a Unique is not a Mythic guarantee
Patch 2.0 did not make Duriel or Andariel guaranteed sources of Mythic Uniques. Blizzard said they did not guarantee a Mythic Unique, though they had twice the Mythic chance of other Tormented bosses. That is a comparative chance, not a promise per run; the notes provide no per-run probability suitable for predicting when a Mythic will drop. This Mythic rule is distinct from the general target-farming assignment for Uniques.

The boss system changed after Season 6. Patch 2.4 moved some Uniques and Legendary aspects primarily found in Infernal Hordes into the general pool, added those Uniques to Lair Boss pools, and broadened Greater Lair Boss pools so they were split among bosses, with two portions of the broader pool available to each and some items shared. Blizzard’s Patch 2.4 notes describe those later changes.

Blizzard’s Season 8 update describes another later system in which Lair Bosses use individually unlocked Hoards and keys, with Initiate, Greater, and Exalted tiers. Those mechanics are not Season 6 instructions. Check the current patch’s boss pools, unlocks, and rewards before farming in a later season.
