Nightmare Dungeons are ordinary dungeons activated by Nightmare Sigils, with added modifiers and version-dependent special content. They are not where you upgrade Paragon Glyphs anymore: Blizzard moved Glyph upgrading to The Pit. Use Nightmare Dungeons for their own dungeon encounters and rewards, and check the current in-game UI and patch notes for exact live-season details.
What are Nightmare Dungeons?
A Nightmare Sigil turns a dungeon into a Nightmare Dungeon run. Its modifiers change the conditions of the run, so the sigil is not just an access item: its effects can make a particular dungeon more or less suitable for your build and current difficulty.

Blizzard’s 2.3.0 PTR announcement described activating another sigil from inside a completed Nightmare Dungeon, allowing players to begin a subsequent run without first leaving. That is a documented quality-of-life feature from PTR notes, not a guarantee that every current interface or season works identically. Check the in-game flow before relying on it.
How do Nightmare Sigils work?
Use a Nightmare Sigil to activate its dungeon run, then consider the modifiers attached to that sigil before committing. Blizzard’s patch 2.5 notes say the chance of another Nightmare Sigil dropping after a clear was reduced; when a sigil does not drop, Sigil Powder drops instead. Those are dated changes, not a published current drop rate or a guarantee of what every run awards.

Choose a sigil for your build and run
- Check whether the modifiers create risks your build handles poorly.
- Consider whether the dungeon has special content, such as a Strongroom or an escalation feature, if those are available in your current version.
- Choose a difficulty you can clear reliably; exact tier bands and reward quantities vary by version and are not established here.
What are Nightmare Dungeons for now?
Nightmare Dungeons remain a way to play dungeon content with sigil-defined modifiers and version-dependent special encounters. Their rewards and activities should be judged on the current version’s terms, rather than on outdated advice about Glyph experience.
Blizzard announced that Paragon Glyph upgrading moved out of Nightmare Dungeons and into The Pit. The official explanation is the relevant guide for this progression change; a July 2026 secondary guide that still describes Nightmare Dungeons as the place to level Glyphs conflicts with it.

Nightmare Dungeons vs. The Pit
| Activity | Role established by Blizzard | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Nightmare Dungeons | Sigil-activated dungeon runs with modifiers and special content that can vary by version. | You want to engage with this dungeon activity and its current rewards or encounters. |
| The Pit | Blizzard’s designated activity for upgrading Paragon Glyphs. | Your goal is Paragon Glyph upgrading. |
This distinction is about the activities’ documented roles, not a claim that one is faster or more rewarding overall. Clear speed and value depend on the current version, build, and goals.

Horadric Strongrooms
Blizzard’s documentation describes Horadric Strongrooms as special content associated with Nightmare Dungeons. Patch 2.5 notes reported improved Strongroom loot quality and scaling at higher Torment and Strongroom tiers, as well as an increased chance for a Nightmare Escalation Sigil from a Strongroom. These are dated changes; they do not establish current reward amounts or rates.

Escalating Nightmares
Blizzard’s 2.3.0 PTR description presented Escalating Nightmares as a chain of three Nightmare Dungeons, with affixes carrying into later dungeons and a final Astaroth encounter. Blizzard’s 3.1 patch notes later mentioned Escalation Nightmare Dungeons in a seasonal objective, confirming official use of the term during the 3.1 period. The PTR description is not a complete live-season reference, so check the current game for availability and exact behavior.
Which details should you verify in the current version?
Exact live-season tier bands, unlock requirements, affix lists, revive limits, reward guarantees, and drop rates are not established by the cited official material here. Those details can change between patches and seasons. Use the current in-game UI and official patch notes for the version you are playing rather than relying on fixed numbers from older guides.
For version context, Blizzard’s patch 2.5 notes record the dated sigil and Strongroom adjustments, while its 3.1 notes establish that Escalation Nightmare Dungeons appeared in official seasonal context. The 2.3.0 PTR announcement describes the sigil-chaining quality-of-life change and the PTR version of special content. Blizzard’s Season of Hatred Rising explanation documents the move of Paragon Glyph upgrading to The Pit.
