For Diablo IV Season 3, the best Seneschal setup depended on the job you needed it to do: protect a melee character and help gather enemies, taunt and group targets for ranged attacks, or add sustained damage and control. Blizzard published three example pairings for those roles, but did not rank them or provide controlled performance comparisons. These are historical Season of the Construct recommendations, not guidance for the current live-season meta.
How the Seneschal build system worked
The Seneschal used two Governing Stones, each paired with three Tuning Stones. A Governing Stone selected one of the companion’s abilities; its three Tuning Stones modified how that ability worked. In total, a loadout had two abilities and six tuning modifiers. Blizzard listed 12 Governing Stones and 27 Tuning Stones for Season 3. Blizzard’s Season of the Construct announcement describes the system and its seasonal stone pool.

That means a useful build starts with a role, not a universal ranking: choose the two abilities that address your character’s needs, then use their tuning slots to support that job.
Blizzard’s three Season 3 Seneschal pairings

Which pairing should you choose?
Choose Autodefense + Lightning Bolt for melee setup
Use Blizzard’s Autodefense and Lightning Bolt combination when you want the companion to help with incoming enemy projectiles and make groups easier for a melee character to engage. Its pull and group-softening role complements close-range play; it is not presented as a universal damage-maximizing setup.
Choose Bushwack + Gyrate for ranged crowd control
Bushwack and Gyrate fit a plan built around taunting and gathering enemies before hitting them from farther away. This is the most directly control-oriented of the three examples, making it a natural match for the Sorcerer and Rogue archetypes Blizzard named.

Choose Tempest + Focus Fire for damage over time and interruption
Tempest and Focus Fire suit damage-over-time play: Tempest is intended to maintain and spread damage as enemies die, while Focus Fire contributes interruption, damage reduction and grouping. Blizzard associated this pairing with Necromancer and Rogue builds.
How to collect and improve the stones
Season 3 progression offered several ways to acquire stones. Blizzard said they could come from Vaults and Wardwoven Chests, with additional chances through Vaults and Arcane Tremors. Defeating Constructs supplied Shattered Stone, which could be crafted into stones at Jewelers. Duplicate stones could be fused to level them and increase ability potency; leveling some Tuning Stones could add projectiles or change damage type. These details describe the Season of the Construct progression system.
