Spiritborn is the strongest recurring pick; Sorcerer is close behind, while Necromancer’s placement depends more on the publisher. These are June–July 2025 guide rankings, not current 2026 advice: Blizzard says the Season of Reckoning launched on April 27, 2026, with broad skill-tree and class changes (Blizzard’s Season of Reckoning announcement).
Season 9 class tier list at a glance
The table compares two publishers’ overall or stage-specific rankings. esports.gg separates leveling from endgame; Destructoid gives one overall placement. Their tiers are editorial assessments, not measured win rates or guarantees of performance.

| Class | esports.gg leveling | esports.gg endgame | Destructoid overall | Season 9 takeaway |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spiritborn | S | S | S | Most consistent top-tier recommendation in these lists. |
| Sorcerer | S | S | A | Strong in both stages; Eld.gg also gives Sorcerer an S-tier recommendation, particularly for Hydra. |
| Necromancer | A | A | S | A strong preference-driven choice, especially for players who favor summoning; not a consensus S tier. |
| Rogue | A | A | B | Viable, though the sampled assessments are less favorable overall. |
| Druid | B | B | B | Lower in these rankings, but Pulverize offers a defensive, straightforward leveling route. |
| Barbarian | B | B | A | Publishers disagree: one rates it lower for leveling and Pit pushing, while the other considers it a reasonable starter. |
Placements are transcribed from esports.gg’s class list and Destructoid’s Season 9 list. The difference is not a contradiction that can be resolved into a single objective order: esports.gg describes criteria including tier strength, leveling, solo play, survivability, and activity performance, while Destructoid says its assessment considers buffs and nerfs, leveling and scaling, Unique items, Paragon changes, and PTR preferences.
Which Season 9 class should you choose?
Pick for the part of the game you intend to play and the way you enjoy fighting. A class that is smooth during the campaign may not be the same class you would choose to push difficult endgame content.

For the most consistent high-tier pick: Spiritborn
Spiritborn is S tier for both leveling and endgame in esports.gg’s ranking and S tier in Destructoid’s overall list. The esports.gg guide names Quill Volley and Evade for leveling, then Rake, Thrash, and Quill Volley for endgame. It also credits the Season 9 Unique Balazan’s Maxtlatl with strengthening Thorn and poison setups. Spiritborn’s complexity is a consideration for newer players, so its top placement does not necessarily make it the easiest first character.
For a strong option across both stages: Sorcerer
Sorcerer earns S tier for leveling and endgame from esports.gg, A overall from Destructoid, and S tier from Eld.gg, which particularly emphasizes Hydra. Chain Lightning, Arc Lash, and Hydra appear among esports.gg’s leveling recommendations; Hydra and Chain Lightning are named for endgame. Eld.gg connects its recommendation to Hydra buffs and the Unique Ophidian Iris. Treat those build-specific advantages as part of the Season 9 context, rather than as timeless class properties.

For summoning: Necromancer
Necromancer is where the sampled lists diverge most clearly: Destructoid puts it in S tier and favors summoning, while esports.gg assigns A tier in both leveling and endgame. That makes it a compelling option for players who want a minion-focused style, without making it a unanimous top-ranked class.
For a straightforward or defensive leveling experience
Destructoid considers Barbarian a reasonable starter, despite esports.gg placing it in B tier for leveling and endgame and viewing it as weaker for high Pit pushing. For Druid, esports.gg points to Pulverize as a defensive, solo-friendly leveling build even though Druid is B tier in both of its rankings. A lower aggregate tier can still fit a player whose priority is a manageable early-game experience.

For Rogue builds to try
esports.gg names Flurry, Dance of Knives, and Barrage for leveling, and ties Flurry in particular to the Unique Deathmask of Nirmitruq. Its assessment is more favorable than Destructoid’s B-tier overall placement. The named gear dependency matters: a build’s appeal can depend on acquiring the piece that enables or strengthens it.

Build names and notes are attributed to esports.gg, Destructoid, and Eld.gg. “Not stated in the cited material” means those guides’ summarized recommendations here do not establish a specific build for that cell; it does not mean the class has no viable build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the rankings for your own goal
- Separate leveling from endgame. Do not assume a leveling tier predicts performance in high-tier Pits or boss encounters; esports.gg publishes different rankings for the two stages.
- Match the activity. Speed farming, solo progression, bossing, and pushing difficult content are distinct goals. A broad tier label may hide what a guide is actually rating.
- Account for complexity and gear. Spiritborn may be more complex, while Barbarian and Druid leveling can depend on obtaining suitable aspects and equipment, according to esports.gg. Named Uniques such as Ophidian Iris, Balazan’s Maxtlatl, and Deathmask of Nirmitruq are build context, not a promise that a fresh character has those advantages.
- Value play style. A lower-ranked class can be the better choice for someone who prefers its pace, skills, or fantasy. The tier lists are editorial opinions, not a prediction of an individual player’s results.
Why these rankings are historical, not current advice
Season 9 guides discussed Horadric Spells and catalysts alongside balance and gear changes. Eld.gg describes Season 9-era changes to tempering, weapon implicit values, overpower damage, and passive or Legendary item scaling. Those systems and evaluations belong to that season’s context; they should not be carried forward as recommendations for a later patch without checking that patch’s notes.

Blizzard’s patch history and its Season of Reckoning announcement establish that Diablo IV changed substantially after Season 9, including skill-tree updates and class changes in the 2026 season. The rankings above therefore answer which classes the sampled guides favored in Season 9—not which class is strongest in the live 2026 game.
