For a practical Spiritborn leveling starting point in Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred, Icy Veins currently recommends Quill Volley Evade and also lists Payback as an alternative. These are guide recommendations, not results from a controlled comparison. Because Blizzard substantially redesigned skill trees and progression in 2026, check the latest build card and skill descriptions in your game before copying a setup.
Which Spiritborn build should you level with?
Icy Veins presents Quill Volley Evade as its recommended leveling build and Payback as another option in its Spiritborn Leveling Guide for Diablo 4. Choose between them by the kind of combat you enjoy rather than assuming one is proven faster or stronger: the available information does not establish a controlled performance comparison.

| Option | Good fit if you prefer | What the guide establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Quill Volley Evade | A mobile approach built around the named attack and Evade. | Icy Veins recommends it as a leveling option; comparative speed or damage results are not established. |
| Payback | Trying a distinct alternative to Quill Volley Evade. | Icy Veins lists it as another leveling option; comparative speed or damage results are not established. |
The Spiritborn has room for different styles, including ranged damage, damage over time, and tanking, but those broad class possibilities do not establish that every style has a current leveling guide or equal performance. Use the guide’s current build card for the exact skills and progression rather than treating a build name as a complete skill-point plan.

Unlock Spirit Hall choices as you progress
The Spirit Hall adds Guardian-based effects to your character. Blizzard’s Spiritborn class overview describes four Guardian Spirits and the primary and secondary selections. The primary choice becomes available through the Sacred Hunt quest at level 15; a secondary selection unlocks at level 30. Icy Veins notes that selecting the same Spirit for both slots is possible when its bonuses suit your setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Pre-order and receive:
- Light Bearer Mount in Diablo IV
- Only one code per customer
- Diablo IV is the next-gen action RPG experience with endless evil to slaughter, countless abilities to master, nightmarish Dungeons, and legendary loot.
- Embark on the campaign solo or with friends, meeting memorable characters through beautifully dark settings and a gripping story, or explore an expansive end game and shared world where players can meet in towns to trade, team up to battle World Bosses, or descend into PVP zones to test their skills against other players - no lobbies necessary - with cross-play and cross-progression on all available platforms.
Plan around Vigor, not passive recovery
Icy Veins describes Vigor as the Spiritborn’s main builder-and-spender resource: basic attacks restore it, while other skills spend it. That makes the basic skill an important part of the resource loop when using a Vigor spender. It does not mean a particular stat roll or item is mandatory.
Treat weapon type as gearing context
The guide lists Quarterstaves, Glaives, and Polearms as Spiritborn weapon types and discusses differences in their affix tendencies. None is established as a required weapon for either leveling option. Equip an appropriate upgrade as you find it, and consult the live skill and item details for the bonuses that matter to your chosen setup.

What to check before copying a build in 2026
Blizzard announced that the Lord of Hatred / Season of Reckoning update redesigned all class skill trees with additional choices and changed progression systems, including the level cap and difficulty structure. Blizzard gives April 27, 2026 as the Season of Reckoning launch date in its Lord of Hatred update announcement.
The Icy Veins page is labeled Season 15 and includes a September 21, 2026 changelog entry, but that entry says only “Minor typos and seasonal updates.” It does not establish that every build detail was comprehensively revalidated after Blizzard’s changes. Before spending skill points or changing your setup, compare the guide’s current build card with the skill descriptions and progression options shown in your live client.

Do you need Vessel of Hatred to play Spiritborn?
Yes. Spiritborn is tied to the Vessel of Hatred expansion, and Blizzard says the expansion requires the Diablo IV base game. Its official Vessel of Hatred page is the place to check the edition and platform listing relevant to your purchase. Confirm that the version you are considering includes the expansion on your platform.
