At the October 2024 launch of Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred, the practical path to leveling was to choose whether to play the base campaign, pick a difficulty you could clear consistently, and follow the expansion campaign into its new activities. The launch-era character cap was Level 60, with Paragon progression after that. This is a historical Day 1 guide—not a claim that the same balance, difficulty tuning, or fastest route applies to the game in 2026.
How do I start the Vessel of Hatred campaign?
You need to own Vessel of Hatred to access its campaign and Spiritborn class. At launch, a new character on either the Eternal or Seasonal Realm could begin the expansion campaign, and an existing Eternal character could enter it too. For a new character, select Skip Campaign to bypass the base-game campaign and start the expansion story. Blizzard’s launch guidance recommends completing the original campaign first if you want the full story experience. Xbox Wire also noted that players who had not finished the base story could complete its short prologue and then access the expansion campaign. That is distinct from owning the base game alone: expansion access still requires Vessel of Hatred.
What was the launch-era leveling structure?
For the October 2024 expansion launch, Blizzard set the character level cap at 60 and announced a Paragon maximum of 300. Character levels ran through Level 60; Paragon progression began after reaching it. Paragon levels were shared among a player’s characters within the same Realm and mode partition. These are launch-era figures and system rules; check current in-game information for any later changes. Blizzard said the redesign was intended to help new characters reach endgame faster, but did not promise a particular number of hours to get there. What difficulty should I use to level?
At launch, Normal and Hard were available by default. Expert unlocked after the prologue, while Penitent unlocked after completing the base campaign’s final quest or choosing to skip its main questline. Blizzard said Gold and experience rewards increased with difficulty, but it did not publish a universal best setting or a measured time-to-level comparison.

The evidence supports higher Gold and experience as difficulty rises, not a claim that the highest available setting always levels faster in practice. If enemies take too long to kill or you repeatedly fail objectives, lowering the difficulty can make your progress more dependable.

How do I level a Spiritborn?
Spiritborn is a Vessel of Hatred-exclusive class associated with Nahantu. Its Spirit Hall feature and animal guardians offer different combat identities, but the official launch material does not establish a single best or fastest leveling build. Treat the options as playstyle directions rather than a power ranking.
- Gorilla: emphasizes defense, mitigation, and physical skills—an appealing direction if you value resilience.
- Jaguar: emphasizes aggressive repeated attacks and attack speed—an appealing direction if you prefer a more offensive rhythm.
Blizzard introduced the class in its Spiritborn overview; Xbox Wire’s launch survival guide outlines the guardian identities. Pick the direction that suits your preferred playstyle and supports reliable clears rather than assuming one guardian is objectively faster.

Which expansion milestones can help during early progression?
Mercenaries
Mercenaries become available through the expansion campaign and can assist in combat. Xbox Wire names Raheir, Aldkin, Varyana, and Subo. They are campaign progression content, not a reason to expect a specific leveling rate.
Kurast Undercity
Xbox Wire described Kurast Undercity as a multi-stage, timed dungeon that unlocks through campaign progress and at Level 15. Spirit Tributes can influence the type of reward you pursue. It is an early activity milestone, but the launch guide does not show that it is the best experience-per-hour route.

Runewords
At launch, Runewords were expansion content: Xbox Wire said runes were unlocked through Ormus during the campaign and could be equipped from Level 20 in socketed items. Those are the original launch rules; later patches may change their details.

Was there a verified fastest route on Day 1?
The available official launch coverage does not establish a statistically supported fastest build, a best experience-per-hour activity, or a measured hours-to-level figure. Blizzard’s stated goal of helping new characters reach endgame faster was an explanation of its progression changes, not a numeric leveling guarantee. A community post asked about the “Fastest way to level up (a Spiritborn),” but the question itself is not evidence for a route.
