When did the Diablo 4 skill-tree update launch?
The overhaul arrived with Diablo IV’s 3.0.0 update and the Season of Reckoning, alongside Lord of Hatred in April 2026. It is no longer an upcoming feature. Blizzard describes it as a broad redesign of every class’s skill tree, rather than a small set of new damage bonuses. Blizzard’s launch information ties the changes to the expansion release.

What changed in the skill trees?
More ways to shape Active skills
Each Active skill now has three branches that unlock progressively as you level. Blizzard says the redesign includes over 40 reworked choices and 80 additional options. The game can make up to 83 Skill Points available, according to Blizzard’s launch explainer; these are announced system figures, not an independent measure of balance or build strength. Passive effects have moved
Passive nodes are no longer part of the skill tree. Many Passive and Key Passive effects have been reworked into Legendary Aspects and Unique items, while some Aspects have moved into the tree. As a result, choosing a skill branch is only one part of understanding a build: some effects that used to come from passive nodes now depend on gear.

Choices can change how a skill works
Blizzard’s Sorcerer Hydra example shows the intended range: a choice can alter attack speed, add explosions, sustain burning in a nearby area, or turn Hydra into Frost Hydra that interacts with Frost abilities. These illustrate the design direction; they do not mean every class skill has those specific transformations.
Do you need Lord of Hatred to get the redesign?
No. Blizzard says the redesigned skill trees apply to all players, regardless of expansion ownership. The expansion adds 20 transformative Skill variants for owners, on top of the shared redesign. Lord of Hatred itself requires Diablo IV. Its expansion-only features include the campaign, the Warlock and Paladin classes, Skovos, War Plans, Echoing Hatred, the Horadric Cube, Talisman, Fishing, and additional storage and character slots. What happens to existing characters and gear?
Blizzard warned that Eternal Realm characters’ pre-expansion equipped and stashed items may change as part of the update. Items are expected to remain functional, but their powers may no longer support the build they were intended for. Some powers may change because Bonus Skill Variants replace older Legendary affixes and Unique powers.

Blizzard also said an affix supporting a function that no longer works may be converted to +100 to All Stats and marked Legacy. Legacy items cannot be crafted or used in the Horadric Cube. No. More branches and relocated effects create additional ways to build a character, but Blizzard’s feature announcements do not establish which choices are strongest after live balance changes. Treat the published counts as descriptions of the announced system, not as evidence that a particular skill or build is currently viable or best.
