Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred Pre-Purchase Problems: What Happened

Launch-day reports described Battle.net eligibility errors, an unavailable Steam in-game purchase path, and separate complaints about missing owned content. Here’s what the evidence establishes—and what it doesn’t.

Players reported checkout and eligibility problems when pre-purchases for Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred opened on December 12, 2025. The reports covered more than one symptom: some customers could not complete a purchase, Steam players were told to use the Steam Store instead of the in-game shop, and some existing owners said expansion content had disappeared. Later launch-era updates reported that most eligibility errors were being resolved. This was a reported launch-day commerce and access problem—not evidence of a currently ongoing outage or a confirmed failure across every platform.

What players reported on December 12, 2025

Notebookcheck reported that customers using Battle.net and other channels encountered failed purchases when Lord of Hatred pre-purchases opened. One reported Battle.net message read, “Sorry, you’re not eligible to purchase Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred – Deluxe Edition.” Other customers described the shorter message, “You’re not eligible to purchase this.” The report also noted an unexpected change in the displayed currency. Notebookcheck cited social posts and forum complaints; these reports document symptoms, not how many accounts were affected. Notebookcheck’s contemporaneous coverage and a December 12 Blizzard forum thread contain examples.

The reports should not be collapsed into one universal outage. Notebookcheck noted that some players could make a purchase, and the Steam issue described in a separate notice concerned the in-game purchase path. There is no published incident count, failure rate, or complete timeline for every storefront in the available coverage.

Which problem did a player encounter?

Checkout errors, a broken in-game store route, and missing access to previously purchased content are different problems. The distinction matters: a platform-store workaround may address a checkout route, but it does not establish that an existing license or entitlement is intact.

Reported symptom What the coverage says What it does not establish
Battle.net eligibility or checkout error Customers reported being blocked from buying, including the Deluxe Edition eligibility message. The number of affected customers, their account or regional circumstances, and a definitive cause.
Steam in-game pre-purchase unavailable A Blizzard notice reproduced by Icy Veins said to purchase through the Steam Store rather than in-game. That all Steam purchases failed, or that the problem affected all other platform stores.
Previously owned content missing Some users reported temporarily losing access to owned expansion content, including Spiritborn access; Blizzard was reported to be investigating. That these access reports were the same fault as failed checkout, or that every report had the same cause.
Currency display changed unexpectedly Notebookcheck described user reports of a currency display glitch. A confirmed charge, a particular currency conversion, or a financial loss.

Steam players: use the platform store for the reported in-game issue

Icy Veins reproduced a Blizzard support notice stating: “We’re currently aware that Lord of Hatred pre-purchase is unavailable in-game when playing on Steam.” The notice continued: “However, purchasing Lord of Hatred from the Steam Store rather than in-game, the purchase should work as intended.” This is a workaround for the reported Steam in-game route, not a general fix for every eligibility error or missing entitlement. Icy Veins’ compilation of Blizzard forum notices and updates also reported later updates saying most ineligibility errors were being resolved.

What the expansion included and what buyers needed

Blizzard’s official pre-purchase announcement offered Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate editions, as well as the Age of Hatred Collection for newcomers. Blizzard said Lord of Hatred includes Vessel of Hatred; both expansions require the Diablo IV base game. Play also requires an internet connection and a Battle.net account. The Age of Hatred Collection was described as including the base game and both expansions. Blizzard’s announcement gave April 28, 2026 as the release date; that date has passed.

Blizzard also said pre-purchasing any Age of Hatred expansion bundle granted immediate Paladin play access, and listed edition-specific digital items and World of Warcraft decor. Those launch offers help explain why customers wanted to buy at opening, but the available reporting does not connect the Paladin unlock, the bundle contents, or the inclusion of Vessel of Hatred to the purchase failures.

What is known—and what remains unconfirmed

The incident is best described as launch-day reports of purchase eligibility and storefront problems, alongside separate reports of missing access to owned content. Icy Veins reported later Blizzard updates that most eligibility errors were being resolved, but the coverage does not provide a quantified closeout for every platform or region. No incident postmortem in these reports establishes a root cause, affected-account total, failure rate, or full outage duration. The live status of every regional storefront has not been verified, so these December 2025 reports should not be treated as proof of a present-day problem.

For anyone assessing a similar complaint, first identify the platform and the purchase path (in-game shop or platform store), then distinguish a failed attempt to buy from loss of access to content already owned. That separates the specific Steam workaround from entitlement issues that require their own account or support investigation.
