PC Game Pass provides the entitlement to play Diablo IV on Windows, but the PC version still requires a Battle.net account, the Battle.net desktop app, an internet connection, and a link between your Microsoft/Xbox account and Battle.net.
The Xbox app checks your Game Pass access and starts the installation. Battle.net handles the Blizzard account connection, authentication, updates, and game launch.

What you need
- An active PC Game Pass, Premium, or Ultimate subscription where Diablo IV is currently included. Availability varies by region, plan, platform, and date.
- Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or later, for the current PC Game Pass requirements. Diablo IV also has separate hardware and storage requirements.
- The Microsoft account that owns the Game Pass subscription.
- An existing Battle.net account, or a new one.
- A reliable internet connection.
Game Pass access is subscription access, not permanent ownership. If the subscription expires or the game leaves the catalog, you may need to renew access or purchase the game.
Account path: Microsoft/Xbox account with Game Pass → linked Battle.net account → Diablo IV.

Check Microsoft’s current PC Game Pass page and the regional Diablo IV listing for live availability. Do not assume that the base game includes expansions, deluxe or ultimate bonuses, cosmetics, Platinum, or Battle Pass content.
How to install Diablo IV through PC Game Pass
- Open the Xbox app on Windows and sign in with the Microsoft account that has your PC Game Pass subscription.
- Search for Diablo IV and select the PC version.
- Click Install.
- When prompted, choose the option to install Battle.net. If Battle.net is already installed, the Xbox app may skip this step or ask to detect the existing installation.
- Finish installing Battle.net, then sign in to the Battle.net account you intend to use.
- Approve the connection between your Microsoft/Xbox account and Battle.net.
- Allow the installation to continue until the game has finished downloading.
- Launch Diablo IV from the Xbox app or Battle.net while both services are signed in to the linked accounts.
Microsoft’s documented Game Pass setup follows this Xbox-app-to-Battle.net flow, though button names can change as the apps are updated. See the official Xbox installation guide for the original sequence.
Use the correct Battle.net account
Do not create a new Battle.net account automatically if you have played Blizzard games before. Use the existing account if it contains your Diablo IV characters, purchases, expansions, cosmetics, Platinum, or other Blizzard progress.
Create a new account only if you are certain that you have no existing Diablo or Blizzard account history to preserve. Linking the wrong account can make characters and purchases appear to be missing, and creating additional accounts can split your entitlements across different identities.

Blizzard also places restrictions on supported platform links. Its account-linking guidance says a Battle.net account can have only one supported account of each platform type linked to it, including one Xbox account. Do not unlink accounts as a first troubleshooting step.
How to check the connection
- Open Blizzard’s Connections page.
- Sign in to the Battle.net account used during setup.
- Confirm that the displayed Xbox/Microsoft connection belongs to the Microsoft account with the active Game Pass subscription.
- Check the Battle.net email address or BattleTag so you know you are using the intended Blizzard account.
If the wrong account is connected, first identify which Battle.net account contains your progress and purchases. Then use Blizzard support before changing the link. Account changes may be restricted or require support intervention.
Fix common PC Game Pass and Battle.net problems
Xbox keeps asking me to install Battle.net
- Confirm that the Xbox app is signed in to the subscribing Microsoft account.
- Confirm that Battle.net is signed in to the intended Blizzard account.
- Close the Xbox app and Battle.net completely.
- Open Task Manager and end remaining Xbox, Battle.net, Blizzard Agent, or related launcher processes.
- Reopen the Xbox app first and start the Diablo IV installation again.
- If offered, allow the Xbox app to detect or reinstall the Battle.net integration.
Check the Battle.net Connections page before unlinking anything.
Battle.net says I need to buy Diablo IV
This usually indicates an account or entitlement mismatch. Possible causes include:

- Battle.net is signed in to a different Blizzard account from the one linked to Xbox.
- The Xbox app is using a Microsoft account without the active subscription.
- The Game Pass entitlement has not synchronized yet.
- The title is not currently included in your regional catalog or plan.
- You launched a separately installed Battle.net copy instead of the Game Pass-linked installation.
Close both launchers, sign back in to the subscribing Microsoft account, sign in to the linked Battle.net account, verify the connection at account.battle.net/connections, and relaunch through the Xbox app. If the problem remains, use Blizzard’s official Game Pass connection-error support article rather than creating another Battle.net account.
I linked the wrong Battle.net account
Do not assume that unlinking is instant or consequence-free. First determine which account contains your Diablo progress and purchases. Then follow Blizzard’s account-linking support guidance or contact support. Avoid repeatedly unlinking, relinking, or creating new accounts.
The game launches and immediately fails
- Update the Xbox app, Battle.net, and Diablo IV.
- Restart Windows.
- Close duplicate Battle.net and Blizzard Agent processes in Task Manager.
- Use Battle.net’s offered update, scan, or repair process.
- Confirm that the installation drive has enough free space.
- Temporarily disable overlays or conflicting launcher processes.
- If the message concerns ownership or entitlement, return to account verification instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
Some players have reported that closing Xbox, updating Diablo IV through Battle.net, and reopening Xbox resolved a launch or installation issue. This is a community-reported workaround, not a guaranteed official fix.

My characters or purchases are missing
The most likely explanation is that the game is running under a different Battle.net account. Exit the game, check the Battle.net email address and BattleTag, open the Connections page, and confirm that the Xbox account is attached to the Battle.net account containing your progress.

The Xbox listing advertises cross-play and cross-progression on supported platforms, but progression is account-dependent. It is not a guarantee that every platform purchase, expansion, or edition bonus transfers automatically.

For an active, correctly linked PC Game Pass entitlement, you should not need to buy the base game again merely to use the Game Pass PC version. That access remains tied to the subscription and catalog availability; it is not a permanent Battle.net purchase.
A separate purchase may make sense if you want permanent access without maintaining Game Pass. Confirm the exact edition, storefront, expansions, and Battle.net account before buying. Purchasing the base game does not automatically mean that every expansion or premium-edition bonus is included.

PC and console use different paths
This guide applies to Windows PC Game Pass. The PC route uses the Xbox app together with Battle.net. Console play is handled through Xbox and has separate console online-multiplayer and subscription rules. Do not apply the PC launcher instructions to the console version.
Can I avoid Battle.net?
No supported PC Game Pass installation path removes Battle.net. Even current Blizzard instructions for PC Game Pass features such as the Diablo IV PTR continue through the Battle.net client launched via the Xbox app. Cloud streaming may change where the game runs, but it does not remove the Microsoft/Xbox-to-Battle.net account relationship.
NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW guidance documents support for selected Battle.net games, including Diablo IV, through Game Pass-linked accounts. This is an option for a weaker PC with a strong internet connection, not a way to bypass Battle.net or account linking.
