Yes, Diablo IV is included with eligible PC Game Pass plans, but PC players still need a Battle.net account and the Battle.net desktop app is part of the installation and launch process. Start the process in the Xbox app, then expect the game to hand off to Battle.net. You do not normally need to buy Diablo IV separately just because Battle.net is required.
Microsoft added Diablo IV to PC and console Game Pass on March 28, 2024. Availability, plan eligibility, regions, and included content can change, so check the current Xbox listing before installing.

What PC Game Pass includes
PC Game Pass provides access to the Diablo IV base game while your eligible subscription remains active. It is an access entitlement, not a replacement for Blizzard’s PC account and launcher infrastructure.
Do not assume that the subscription also includes every expansion, premium edition, cosmetic item, Platinum purchase, or Battle Pass. Expansions and premium content may require separate entitlements. The Xbox catalog can also vary by country and subscription plan.

The Xbox listing identifies Diablo IV as requiring a Battle.net account and an internet connection. Diablo IV is an online game, so PC Game Pass does not turn it into an offline title.
Why Battle.net is required
Three accounts and services have different jobs:
- Microsoft account: Holds your PC Game Pass subscription and signs you into the Xbox app.
- Battle.net account: Provides Blizzard authentication, game entitlements, friends, characters, and cross-platform account continuity.
- Battle.net desktop app: Installs, updates, authenticates, and launches the PC version in this distribution flow.
The Xbox app is the starting point for the Game Pass entitlement. Battle.net is the Blizzard-side client that manages the Diablo IV installation. That is why selecting Install in the Xbox app may open Battle.net or ask you to install it rather than downloading the whole game through the Xbox app alone.
Microsoft’s Windows guidance directs PC players to begin in the Xbox app, while the Xbox product listing separately confirms the Battle.net requirement. Microsoft also warns on its PC Game Pass page that some PC games use third-party launchers or Battle.net.

- Install or update the Xbox app for Windows.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns your active PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
- Search for Diablo IV in the Xbox app and open its listing.
- Select Install. The exact label may change after an app update.
- When prompted, install or open the Battle.net desktop app.
- Sign in to your existing Battle.net account, or create one if you have never used Blizzard’s service.
- Approve the account connection when prompted.
- Confirm that the Microsoft and Battle.net accounts are the ones you actually intend to use.
- Let Battle.net install or update Diablo IV.
- Launch the game through Battle.net or the Xbox app’s Play control, depending on the current integration.
If you previously bought Diablo IV through Battle.net, use that same Battle.net account. Creating a second account can separate your existing characters, purchases, friends, and entitlements from the Game Pass installation.
Account linking is not account merging
Linking your Microsoft and Battle.net accounts does not merge two Blizzard accounts into one. Choose carefully before accepting a prompt. Diablo IV progress and purchases are associated with the relevant Blizzard account, and cross-platform features depend on using the same Battle.net account where supported.

Blizzard’s Steam announcement confirms that Diablo IV requires a Battle.net connection across platforms, including Steam. Keep access to the Battle.net email address, password, and security methods you use for the game.
Can the Xbox app install Diablo IV by itself?
Not reliably as an Xbox-app-only installation. The Xbox app can identify your Game Pass entitlement and initiate the process, but the PC Game Pass route may hand the installation to Battle.net. The exact prompts and download behavior can vary with Xbox app, Windows, and Battle.net updates.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In practical terms, expect both launchers to matter: Xbox verifies your subscription, while Battle.net handles the Blizzard game client.
If Battle.net is already installed
An existing Battle.net installation may work immediately if it is current and signed into the correct account. Problems are more likely when Battle.net is:
- Signed into a different Blizzard account;
- Out of date or damaged;
- Closed when the Xbox app tries to hand off the install;
- Installed in a location the Xbox app cannot detect; or
- Left with files or registration data from a failed installation.
Do not assume that an installed launcher is automatically the correct launcher. Verify the account first, then update Battle.net and retry the handoff.

- A Bleak Future Diablo IV - takes place many years after the events of Diablo III, after millions have been slaughtered by the actions of the High Heavens and Burning Hells alike. In the power vacuum, a legendary name resurfaces—Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, the whispered progenitor of humanity. Her grip on Sanctuary cuts deep into the hearts of men and women alike, cultivating the worst in its denizens and leaving the world a dark, hopeless place
- An Open Sanctuary to Explore - With Diablo IV, we are cracking open the campaign approach to broaden Sanctuary in a way we've never explored. With a fully open world, players will be able to adventure across five distinctively dangerous regions in any order, all seamlessly connected for uninterrupted journeys
- The Classes of Diablo IV - Players will be able to choose between five different, unique classes on launch
Common installation problems and fixes
“Battle.net is required” even though it is installed
- Close Diablo IV, Battle.net, and the Xbox app.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Battle.net and sign in to the intended account.
- Open the Xbox app and verify the correct Microsoft account is active.
- Retry the installation.
- Update both apps if the handoff still fails.
If that does not work, consult Blizzard’s current Game Pass and Battle.net troubleshooting guidance. In some cases Blizzard recommends closing or uninstalling Battle.net before retrying the Xbox installation flow, but treat that as a targeted recovery step rather than the first thing to do. Avoid deleting folders or changing the registry unless current official instructions specifically call for it.

The Install button is missing or disabled
Check that your subscription is active, the Xbox app is updated, and you are viewing the Game Pass version rather than a paid store edition. Regional catalog differences can also affect availability. If Diablo IV is already installed through Battle.net, open that launcher and look for Play, Update, or Scan and Repair instead.
Battle.net shows “Buy” instead of “Install”
Do not purchase the game immediately. A “Buy” button can mean that the wrong Battle.net account is signed in, the Microsoft and Battle.net accounts were not linked correctly, the Game Pass entitlement has not refreshed, or you are viewing an expansion or paid edition.
Verify both accounts and restart the launchers first. Buying the game may create an unnecessary duplicate purchase and will not necessarily repair an account-linking problem.
Installation or update errors
Common causes include insufficient storage, permissions or antivirus interference, corrupted partial downloads, conflicting installation locations, and two launchers trying to update the game at once. Use one update path at a time, close duplicate launchers, and check the account and installation location before removing files.

What the Battle.net requirement changes during gameplay
Mostly, it affects setup and account management rather than the core controls. You must retain access to the linked Battle.net account, maintain an internet connection, and use the same Blizzard account when relying on cross-play or cross-progression features.
Cancelling Game Pass can remove access to the included base game unless you separately own it. Platform-specific purchases and subscription benefits also do not automatically become universal ownership across PC storefronts and consoles.
Can you use Steam instead?
Yes, but Steam is a separate purchase and launcher route—not a way to use the PC Game Pass entitlement without Battle.net.
- PC Game Pass: Xbox app entitlement plus Battle.net account and installation flow.
- Steam: Steam purchase and launcher, still linked to Battle.net.
- Battle.net purchase: Blizzard purchase and Battle.net launcher.
Owning Diablo IV on one PC storefront does not automatically grant ownership on the others. Steam may be preferable if you want Steam library features, but it does not remove the Battle.net requirement.
Which route makes sense?
| Route | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PC Game Pass | Trying the base game with an existing subscription | Access depends on the subscription and may involve two launchers |
| Battle.net purchase | Permanent access through Blizzard’s PC ecosystem | Requires a separate purchase |
| Steam purchase | Players who prefer Steam’s library and social features | Still requires Battle.net and a separate Steam purchase |
The Battle.net desktop app itself is free. For a current PC Game Pass subscriber, the sensible first step is to connect the correct account and use the included base game before buying another copy.
Bottom line
Diablo IV is available through PC Game Pass, but the PC version still requires Battle.net. Start in the Xbox app, link the correct Microsoft and Battle.net accounts, and expect Battle.net to manage the Diablo IV installation and launch. Do not buy the game again until you have checked the account connection and confirmed whether your subscription already supplies the base-game entitlement.
