Diablo IV launched on June 6, 2023, with a strong foundation: a story-driven action RPG built around loot, character builds, randomized dungeons and a shared world. That is the launch-era case for the game, not a verdict on its 2026 live version. Blizzard has since announced major additions and system changes through its Lord of Hatred expansion materials, so players considering the game now should distinguish the original experience from what has been added later.
What Diablo IV set out to be
Blizzard’s early design overview framed Diablo IV as a return to the series’ dark action-RPG roots, with an open shared world and loot-driven character growth. It described randomized, instanced dungeons, optional multiplayer and five planned launch classes. That page documents design intent during development; it is not a complete inventory of the live game’s current systems. Blizzard’s early feature overview is best read in that historical context.

The appeal is easy to understand: fight through hordes of enemies, gather gear, and shape a character around the skills and effects you find. Blizzard’s overview said legendary effects were intended to change how skills work, making loot more than a simple increase to damage. The class lineup it names includes Barbarian, Sorceress and Druid, alongside the promise of two additional classes for launch.
How strong was the launch case?
Diablo IV’s design combines several ingredients that suit the series: a substantial campaign, repeatable dungeons, character specialization and the option to encounter other players in a shared world. Those elements offer a clear route from story progression into ongoing character development. Blizzard’s early design overview supports that launch-era design assessment, but it does not establish a reviewer’s firsthand experience, a critic consensus, or a basis for assigning a score.

Blizzard’s June 2023 launch announcement reported that players had spent 93 million hours in the game during its four days of early access. The company also called Diablo IV its “fastest-selling game of all time,” based on its own pre-launch unit sales comparison across console and PC through June 5, 2023. These are publisher-reported launch figures, not independent measures of quality or the game’s current player population. Blizzard’s launch announcement gives the company’s figures and attribution.
Playing solo, with friends and across platforms
At launch, Blizzard announced versions for Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, along with cross-platform play and cross-progression. Its announcement specified online co-op for up to four players and two-player couch co-op on consoles. In a later expansion notice, Blizzard says online access through a Battle.net account is required. Availability and purchase terms can vary by region and store. The launch announcement and Lord of Hatred page provide the relevant platform and access details.

What has changed since 2023?
Do not treat a launch-era review as a description of the current live game. Blizzard’s 2026 Lord of Hatred materials describe a new campaign set in Skovos, the Warlock and Paladin classes, and War Plans, an activity chain for endgame play. The same page separates permanent game updates from season-specific content and expansion-exclusive material.
Blizzard also lists broad permanent updates including skill-tree changes, a loot filter, map overlay, pathfinding, and changes to level cap and progression. These updates make the game’s current systems meaningfully different from its original launch pitch. The official Lord of Hatred page is the source for those announced additions; patch-specific details can change over time.

What do you need to buy?
Blizzard says both Lord of Hatred and Vessel of Hatred require the Diablo IV base game. Its product information also describes campaign-start options based on owned or completed content, including starting from an expansion or going directly to endgame after completing the expansions. Blizzard says progress is shared across platforms. Check the current store listing for your region and platform to confirm the exact bundle and purchase terms. Blizzard’s Diablo IV product page and Lord of Hatred page cover those requirements.
Verdict: a promising launch, with a different game to assess today
As a launch-era review premise, “off to a hell of a good start” fits a game whose announced foundation brought together a campaign, loot-driven builds, randomized dungeons and flexible multiplayer. But that judgment belongs to the 2023 launch context. For a purchase in 2026, assess the base game and the specific expansions or updates you want, rather than assuming a launch review covers the present-day version.
