Barrier Generation is a Diablo 4 modifier associated with creating a Barrier, but Blizzard’s published examples do not establish one universal formula for how it changes every Barrier. The actual trigger, amount, duration and cap depend on the specific skill, passive, item or seasonal effect. Check that source’s current in-game tooltip before assuming Barrier Generation changes its size or behavior.
What Barrier Generation means
Barrier Generation is a modifier tied to generating a Barrier. Blizzard lists it as a benefit of the Spiritborn passive Resilient, and a seasonal modifier has increased Barrier and Fortify Generation. Those examples confirm the stat exists, but they do not define how it applies to every Barrier source.

In particular, the word “generation” alone does not establish that the stat changes a Barrier’s maximum size, duration or trigger. Read the effect that creates the Barrier: its wording determines what is known about how that specific effect works.
What to check on a Barrier source
- Trigger: What event creates the Barrier—for example, periodic generation or healing above Maximum Life?
- Amount and scaling: Does the effect state a fraction of Maximum Life or another basis?
- Duration: How long does the Barrier last, if the effect specifies a duration?
- Cap: Does the source state a maximum?
- Conditions and synergies: Does it require a particular action-bar setup, or does another effect reward having a Barrier active?
Examples from Blizzard’s patch notes
Energy Focus: periodic generation with a stated cap
In Diablo IV Patch Notes 2.0, Blizzard described Energy Focus as generating a six-second Barrier in increments each second: 0.5%, 1.0% or 1.5% of Maximum Life, depending on rank, up to 30%. The effect is lost for five seconds after the character loses health. These are version-specific game balance values for Energy Focus, not a universal Barrier formula.

Resilient: Barrier Generation on the Spiritborn
Diablo IV Patch Notes 2.4 lists Resilient as granting 1.5%, 3% or 4.5% Maximum Life, Knock Down Duration and Barrier Generation for each Base Gorilla Skill on the Spiritborn action bar, depending on rank. This is a class- and passive-specific example; it does not say how much Barrier Generation changes other sources.
Marred Guard: a seasonal increase
Blizzard’s Season of Infernal Chaos announcement lists Marred Guard with 50–100% increased Barrier and Fortify Generation. This is a seasonal modifier value, not evidence of a permanent baseline bonus or a universal conversion rate.

Temerity: overheal-based Barrier scaling
In Diablo IV Patch Notes 3.1, Blizzard says Temerity’s Barrier scales from the amount of overhealing rather than scaling the maximum Barrier amount. The note also describes the Barrier maximum as 100% of Maximum Life and says the Barrier can be gained when healing takes the character above Maximum Life. That wording describes Temerity’s own behavior; it should not be applied to other Barrier effects.

Generating a Barrier and receiving a benefit while one is active are separate build considerations. For example, Patch 2.0 describes Dampen Layer as granting Damage Reduction while a Barrier is active. That effect depends on having a Barrier, not on a stated Barrier Generation calculation.

How to use the stat in a build
Start with the exact source you plan to use and its current tooltip. Identify its trigger, scaling, duration, cap and conditions, then consider whether Barrier Generation is listed as an applicable modifier. Do not infer an interaction from another class, item or season’s example; balance and source wording can change between versions.
The official patch notes cited here document particular effects and values, but do not establish how Barrier Generation is calculated for every Barrier source. For exact current behavior, rely on the current in-game tooltip and the latest patch notes.
