Diablo IV has a strong case for players who want a story-led action RPG, flexible build experimentation, and satisfying gear crafting. PC Gamer scored its Lord of Hatred expansion 90/100, praising the campaign and systems changes while finding the endgame activity layer less developed. For new players, the Age of Hatred Collection is Blizzard’s bundle with the base game and both expansions; returning players should weigh the improvements against the work of relearning systems that shift between seasons.
What do the Diablo IV reviews say?
PC Gamer reviewer Tyler Colp gave Lord of Hatred 90/100. His review is a specific assessment of the expansion, not evidence that every player will have the same experience. Its strongest points are the campaign, earlier build options from revised skill trees, and changes that make loot more rewarding to craft and improve.

Colp wrote: “Smaller—but no less important—changes to loot and the new Diablo 2-inspired Horadric Cube crafting system have revitalized the chase for the best gear.” The review’s main reservation is the endgame: War Plans add progression and activity modifiers, but Colp found their design less carefully curated than the activities in Path of Exile 2. The review’s test setup was a PC with an RTX 5090, Intel Core i9 12900K, and 32 GB of RAM. Those are the reviewer’s hardware details, not recommended or minimum system requirements. PC Gamer listed an expected expansion price of $39.99; that is the review’s price expectation, not a verified current price for every region or platform.

What does Lord of Hatred add, and what is available more broadly?
Blizzard’s 2026 announcement separates expansion content from updates to the full game and seasonal content. That distinction matters when deciding what an edition includes or what a player can access. Blizzard’s Lord of Hatred feature overview describes these layers:
| Content layer | Features identified by Blizzard |
|---|---|
| Lord of Hatred expansion | Campaign against Mephisto, the Skovos region, and the Warlock and Paladin classes. |
| Permanent full-game updates | Skill-tree updates, a level cap of 70, itemization updates, and a loot filter. |
| Season of Reckoning | Season Rank objectives and rewards, plus the Season of Reckoning Battle Pass. Blizzard describes the season as launching alongside the expansion without a separate seasonal story, theme, or gameplay elements. |
These are features described in Blizzard’s 2026 announcement; seasonal content and current availability can change.

- LORD OF HATRED EXPANSION — Includes Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred Standard Edition and Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred. The Diablo IV base game is required to play.
- IN-GAME EXTRAS — Get 1 Extra Stash Tab, 2 Additional Character Slots, and 3 Decor Items in World of Warcraft.
- NEW CLASSES AND REGION — Master two new classes and explore the ancient region of Skovos in the Lord of Hatred expansion.
- ACTION RPG ADVENTURE — Slay demons, master abilities, explore nightmarish dungeons, and find legendary loot in a dark open world.
- NEW CAMPAIGN AGAINST MEPHISTO — Make your stand against the Prime Evil Mephisto in a rich new story featuring new enemies, regions, and narrative twists.
Is Diablo IV worth playing now?
It is most compelling if you enjoy building a character through combat and loot, want a campaign at the center of the experience, or like refining equipment rather than treating drops as disposable. Colp found that the revised skill trees made it easier to shape campaign builds earlier, and praised the Warlock’s summoning-focused play style. His comments on crafting and item changes point to a game that puts more emphasis on making gear useful, not just replacing it.
The main qualification is what you want after the campaign. If a broad, deeply curated endgame activity system is your priority, the review’s criticism of War Plans is important. The expansion improves that layer with progression and modifiers, but Colp did not consider it as developed as the campaign and loot changes.

Is Diablo IV worth coming back to?
For lapsed players, the game may feel substantially different from the version they left. PC Gamer Senior Guides Writer Sean Martin says it has reached firmer ground with Lord of Hatred, but also describes relearning fundamental systems after seasonal changes as frustrating. That is one reviewer’s perspective, not a guarantee that every returning player will have the same reaction. Read Sean Martin’s retrospective.
Returning players should consider whether new builds, item systems, and seasonal progression sound inviting or feel like another round of homework. Frequent changes can refresh the game, but they may also mean that familiar advice or old character plans no longer match the current rules.

Which Diablo IV edition includes the expansions?
Blizzard positions the Age of Hatred Collection as the new-player bundle. Its listed contents are the base game, Vessel of Hatred, and Lord of Hatred. Both expansions require the base game, and Blizzard says Diablo IV requires an internet connection and a Battle.net account. Check the platform and any Diablo IV or expansion licenses you already own before buying a collection, since the bundle may include content you already have. See Blizzard’s Diablo IV game page and its Battle.net listing for current product details.
Blizzard says progress is shared across platforms, but that does not by itself establish that every edition, entitlement, or purchase transfers between platforms. Confirm what is included for your platform and account before purchasing. Current regional pricing and specific retailer listings are not established here.

How does Diablo IV work on Nintendo Switch 2?
Meristation’s October 2026 review of the Age of Hatred Collection on Nintendo Switch 2 calls it the most complete version, while warning that always-online play limits the appeal of portable use. The review reports cross-progression and local shared-screen co-op. It also says Nintendo Switch Online is not needed for solo play but is required for activities involving other players. These are platform-specific findings from that review, not a universal statement about requirements on other platforms. Read Meristation’s Switch 2 review.
