Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which game or application shows the error?
diactfrm.dlldoes not identify the game by itself. - When does it appear? During launch, after an update, after antivirus action, or only when a controller is connected?
- Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit? Historical copies of this file are primarily 32-bit and were used by older DirectInput software.
- Does the message say the file is missing, or that a module could not be found? The latter can mean that
diactfrm.dllexists but one of its dependencies cannot load.
The safest first move is to repair the program that displays the error. Do not begin by copying a DLL into System32.
What diactfrm.dll belongs to
diactfrm.dll is associated with Microsoft’s older DirectInput Mapper Framework, part of the legacy DirectInput input-mapping stack used by games and applications that support keyboards, mice, joysticks, and other controllers. It is related to dimap.dll, another Microsoft DirectInput Mapper component. Historical Windows XP file inventories show diactfrm.dll alongside that file. Publicly documented copies are generally x86, or 32-bit, rather than modern native x64 system components.
That distinction matters on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Current Windows does not necessarily include every optional, legacy DirectInput component that an old game expects. The file may instead have been installed into the game’s directory by its installer.

It is not a Visual C++ runtime and there is no reason to install .NET or a Visual C++ Redistributable merely because the filename ends in .dll.
Fix 1: Repair the game or application first
This is the most likely fix when only one title reports diactfrm.dll.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the check.
- Start the game again.
Steam may restore the application’s original legacy files or replace a damaged copy. If it reports that files were restored but the error remains, restart Windows before testing again.
Other launchers
Look for an option named Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Manage installation. The exact wording varies by launcher.
If there is no repair option:
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- Use Reset only if Repair fails and you are willing to lose the application’s local settings.
For older disc-based software, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original disc or the publisher’s official installer. Do not delete the program folder first if saved games or configuration files are stored there.
If the program was recently patched, install its official update after reinstalling. A file from a different release can be present but still fail because the application expects another build or dependency.
Fix 2: Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX components
An old game can require side-by-side DirectX files that are not included in the current DirectX installation. The relevant official package is Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010). Download it from Microsoft

Microsoft says this package installs legacy components used by older games and does not replace the DirectX version built into Windows.
To install it:
- Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exefrom Microsoft’s Download Center. - Open the downloaded file.
- Accept the license terms.
- When asked for an extraction folder, choose a temporary folder such as
C:DXRedist. - Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Double-click DXSETUP.exe.
- Accept the installer terms and let setup finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected game.
This package is an appropriate remedy for many old DirectX dependencies, but Microsoft’s public page does not specifically confirm that it installs diactfrm.dll. If the file belongs to the game’s own installation, the game’s repair or reinstall process remains the definitive fix.
Do not copy files from the extracted folder manually unless the game’s official documentation specifically instructs you to do so. Let the installer place its components.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an old DLL, especially when the file is bundled with an obsolete game.

- Open your antivirus application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or Detection history.
- Search for
diactfrm.dlland the name of the affected game. - Check the file’s original path.
- If it came from a trusted, authentic installer, use Restore or Allow on device only after checking its digital signature or hash.
- Re-run the game’s repair or file verification.
- Start the game.
If the file came from an unofficial archive, a modified executable, or an unknown installer, do not restore it. Remove the application and reinstall it from its original or official source.
A quarantine event immediately before the error is more useful evidence than repeatedly replacing the DLL. If antivirus reports several unrelated DLLs from multiple programs, run a full malware scan and investigate the storage drive rather than restoring files individually.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components when other system files are failing
Use Windows repair commands when several Windows features are failing, system files are damaged, or the problem began after an interrupted update. These commands may not restore an app-local legacy DirectInput file.

Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Click Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. Its instructions are available in Microsoft’s SFC and DISM guidance.

If it says it could not repair some files, repeat the process after Windows Update has completed, then repair or reinstall the affected application.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can turn troubleshooting into guesswork. Outbyte PC Repair can show what it detects before applying its full-version repairs, but it is not required and reinstalling the game remains the definitive fix when the DLL belongs to that game.
Fix 5: Check the application’s architecture and file location
A 32-bit game needs a compatible 32-bit version of its dependencies. Historical diactfrm.dll copies are primarily x86, so a random modern x64 replacement is not an equivalent file.
On 64-bit Windows, the folder names are counterintuitive:

That does not mean you should manually place this file in SysWOW64. The correct location is usually the affected application’s installation directory or a legacy DirectX folder installed by the game’s setup program.
To find the calling executable:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Start the game until the error appears, if possible.
- Look for the game’s executable.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
You can also check the error in Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Check Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
If diactfrm.dll is already beside the executable but Windows still reports that a module could not be found, a dependent DLL may be missing or incompatible. Reinstalling the complete application is safer than replacing only the named file.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL installation command.

There is no verified evidence that diactfrm.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Running this is therefore not a recommended fix:

regsvr32 diactfrm.dll
It can produce an “entry point not found” error and does not install missing dependencies. Use the application’s installer instead.
Fix 7: Do not enable Windows features blindly
Some old games mention DirectPlay or other legacy Windows components. You can check available features here:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Expand Legacy Components if it is present.
- Enable a feature only if the game’s documentation or launcher specifically requires it.
- Click OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Enabling Legacy Components does not guarantee that diactfrm.dll will be installed. It is not a substitute for repairing the game or installing its required DirectX package.
Fix 8: Update drivers only for a broader controller problem
A graphics or controller driver is usually not the cause of a single diactfrm.dll error. Driver work becomes relevant when the game also loses controller input, Windows shows HID errors, or several input devices fail.
To check:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices, Keyboards, and Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the controller.
Do not uninstall a working device simply because the game reports a DLL error. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers instead of making you hunt through several hardware vendors; its full-version driver installation is optional, and it will not replace the game’s missing DirectInput file.
Fix 9: Use compatibility settings for very old games
If reinstalling the game and installing legacy DirectX components do not help, the application may depend on older Windows behavior in addition to the DLL.
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Right-click the main
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try the Windows version recommended by the game’s publisher.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the game requires it.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Launch the game.
Use the game’s official patch or documented compatibility instructions where available. If the title still cannot run, an older supported Windows environment or virtual machine may be more reliable than collecting individual DLLs.

Should you download diactfrm.dll manually?
Avoid random DLL download sites. A manually downloaded file can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, come from an incompatible Windows build, or create a second error such as “entry point not found.” It also leaves the original problem unresolved if the game’s installer, dependencies, or registry configuration are damaged.

- Windows repair tools when broader system corruption is present.
Do not place an unverified copy in both System32 and SysWOW64.
When to use System Restore
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a driver installation, software cleanup, or system change and a restore point exists.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Complete the wizard and restart.
Restore points may not contain the game’s original files, so reinstalling the affected application may still be necessary.
FAQ
Is diactfrm.dll a Windows file?
It is a Microsoft legacy DirectInput component associated with older Windows and DirectX input-mapping technology. A current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation is not guaranteed to contain it.

The filename alone cannot identify a particular game. Identify the executable producing the error, then repair that application.
Should I install DirectX June 2010?
It is the correct official legacy DirectX package to try for older games. It may not specifically install diactfrm.dll, so repair the game first and treat DirectX setup as a dependency repair rather than a guaranteed file replacement.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
Normally no. This file has not been verified as a self-registering DLL, and regsvr32 does not restore missing dependencies.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency of diactfrm.dll may be absent, incompatible, or blocked. Reinstall the complete application instead of replacing the visible file alone.
What if every game starts showing different DLL errors?
Stop downloading individual DLLs. Check antivirus history, run a full malware scan, use DISM and SFC, inspect disk health, and investigate broader Windows or storage corruption.
