There is no confirmation in the cited sources that a released Resident Evil Requiem update changed Grace and Leon’s appearances. The controversy was about a separate NVIDIA DLSS 5 showcase rendition of Grace, which TechRadar reported drew criticism for altering her look. Capcom’s announced free game update adds a mode; its announcement does not describe an appearance-changing graphics patch.
What actually changed—and what did not
The reported dispute followed NVIDIA’s March 2026 DLSS 5 showcase, which presented a rendering of Grace that some viewers criticized as substantially different from her original design. TechRadar reported on the backlash and quoted producer Masato Kumazawa responding to players’ preference for the original design. The report concerns a demonstration, not evidence that a game update replaced Grace’s or Leon’s appearance.
Capcom’s May 8, 2026 announcement describes a free update that adds a game mode. It does not identify an update changing either character’s look. That distinction matters: a graphics demonstration can show how a technology renders a scene without being a patch to the released game.
Why Grace looked different in the DLSS 5 showcase
The reported reaction focused especially on Grace’s face and overall appearance. Kumazawa said, “The fact a lot of players commented they really liked the original design of Grace and didn’t want to see it changed was a positive.” He added that it “meant we got the design right [and] points to the fact that Grace quickly established herself as a fan favourite, that people had such strong opinions on her design.” These comments are quoted by TechRadar; they describe the producer’s interpretation of the reaction, not a measured survey of players.

#1 Best Overall
- Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
- Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
The available reporting does not quantify how many fans objected, so “split fans” should not be read as a statistically established division. What is supported is that TechRadar reported criticism of the showcase rendering and that Kumazawa welcomed players’ defense of Grace’s original design.
How the showcase differs from the released game’s graphics
Resident Evil Requiem launched on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, according to Capcom’s sales announcement. The game has its own documented rendering technologies; those should not be conflated with NVIDIA’s later DLSS 5 showcase.

NVIDIA says the work targeted high-end PC users. This technical account does not show that character designs were changed by an update. NVIDIA’s developer interview |

Capcom’s own graphics work also predates the DLSS 5 controversy. In its launch-period explanation of Requiem’s PS5 Pro rendering, Capcom’s Masaru Ijuin said: “With Resident Evil Requiem, we focused on enhancing the presentation quality of the protagonist through an upgraded version of RE Engine to deepen the player’s immersion in horror.” That statement concerns the game’s presentation and rendering, not a redesign prompted by the showcase.
