Resident Evil 5 earned generally favorable reviews, but its appeal depends on what you want from the series. It leans into deliberate, sometimes weighty movement, large-scale action and cooperative play rather than centering the experience on survival-horror tension. It is a stronger fit if you want an action game to play with a partner; solo players should know that co-op is part of its identity.
What did critics think of Resident Evil 5?
Metacritic currently lists an 83 Metascore from 91 critic reviews, which it classifies as “Generally Favorable.” Its page also lists a 7.2 user score from 1,641 ratings. These are live page figures accessed in 2026, so review counts and scores can change.

That broad reception reflects a game whose strengths are also its defining trade-offs. In a March 13, 2009 review, GameSpot’s Lark Anderson wrote: “Though the slow, deliberate movement and shooting may not appeal to everyone, this new sequel’s frequent large-scale battles and co-op play still offer a fun and exciting adventure.” The verdict points to the key question for a prospective player: whether action and teamwork sound more appealing than a return to the series’ slower survival-horror style.
Is Resident Evil 5 worth playing?
It is worth considering if you enjoy action-focused campaigns, big battles and cooperative play. It may be a less natural fit if you expect the pacing and emphasis on survival horror associated with other entries in the series. Its movement and shooting are deliberate rather than especially quick, a quality that can feel distinctive or frustrating depending on your preferences.

The game also found significant commercial reach at launch: Capcom announced on June 1, 2009, that it had surpassed 5 million copies shipped to retail. That is the publisher’s shipment figure, not a claim about copies sold directly to players.
Is Resident Evil 5 good solo, or better in co-op?
Both single-player and co-op are listed for the PS4 edition. Co-op is a major part of the game’s appeal in contemporary reviews, so a human partner is a natural choice if you want the teamwork and shared action emphasized by critics. The available evidence does not establish a detailed solo-versus-co-op performance comparison; solo suitability ultimately depends on whether you enjoy the game’s deliberate combat and action focus without a partner.

What is included in the PS4 edition?
PlayStation’s PS4 listing describes an edition that includes previously released downloadable content, extra figures and costumes, No Mercy, and Mercenaries United, alongside single-player and co-op modes. Check the platform’s own listing for the version you intend to buy: the cited contents describe PlayStation’s PS4 edition and do not establish that every platform or regional release has identical features.
