Hello Kitty Island Adventure is a real Sanrio game, but its possible connection to a South Park meme has not been confirmed. The game launched on Apple Arcade in 2023, years after the show’s gag gave the same title to a fictional game. The resemblance is striking; the evidence does not establish that the joke inspired the developers.
Is Hello Kitty Island Adventure really a game?
Yes. Apple announced the game’s Apple Arcade release on July 28, 2023, describing it as a life simulation about befriending Sanrio characters and exploring an island. Its activities include puzzles, challenges, treasures, and an underwater world. Players meet characters such as Hello Kitty, Kuromi, Badtz-Maru, and Cinnamoroll while restoring an abandoned theme park. Apple said it could be played solo or with a friend. Apple’s launch announcement also described the game as offering more than 40 hours of gameplay; that was Apple’s launch-era estimate, not an independently measured or current playtime figure.

The game was developed by Sunblink. Apple Developer’s interview identifies the studio as Boulder-based and discusses the game’s presentation on Apple TV, but does not connect its development to South Park. Read the Apple Developer interview.

A South Park gag used “Hello Kitty Island Adventure” as the name of a fictional game. A July 2023 blog post by Jack Amick reproduced a Polygon headline suggesting the meme may have inspired the real game, along with an important qualification: “It’s not clear why the developers would decide to call back the old joke now, nor has the team confirmed the connection between the new game and South Park.” Amick’s July 10, 2023 post is the surfaced source for that wording.

That caveat matters: the available reporting does not establish the game’s title as a deliberate reference, and no surfaced statement from Sanrio or Sunblink confirms that the meme influenced development. The accurate description is a possible connection, not a confirmed origin story.
Where can you play it?
The release picture has changed since launch. Apple said the game was available only on Apple Arcade in July 2023, but Sanrio later announced downloadable Nintendo Switch and Steam editions in January 2025. The official game website currently lists Apple Arcade, Nintendo Switch, Steam for PC, and PlayStation 5. Check the relevant regional store for current availability, editions, and pricing.

Sanrio’s January 30, 2025 announcement gave Japan-only prices of ¥6,578 for the downloadable version and ¥9,790 for the Nintendo Switch package edition; those figures are not global or current-price guidance. What the developers and Sanrio have said
Apple’s launch announcement quoted Craig Takiguchi, Sanrio, Inc.’s chief operating officer, describing the game in terms of friendship, kindness, inclusivity, play, and positive connections. That statement explains the official framing of the project; it does not address the South Park meme. None of the cited official release or developer materials confirms a link between the joke and the game’s creation.
