No. Public reporting confirms that some BioWare employees were laid off after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, while many others were transferred to different EA teams. But the available evidence does not establish what happened to every writer who worked on the game, so the claim that BioWare fired them all is unsupported.

What BioWare said about the studio changes

On January 29, 2025, BioWare general manager Gary McKay said the studio was reorganizing between development cycles. A core team was working on the next Mass Effect, and, at that stage, BioWare did not need the full studio’s support. McKay also said the company had worked to match “many colleagues” with suitable open roles elsewhere at EA. That statement described transfers for many staff members, but did not say that everyone found a role or disclose each employee’s outcome. BioWare’s Studio Update.

What later reporting confirmed

When GameSpot reported the update on January 30, it said it was not yet clear whether the changes involved layoffs. The story was later updated with reports from employees who said they had been laid off. GameSpot’s report.

In June 2025, the Los Angeles Times, drawing on interviews with nearly two dozen people who worked on The Veilguard, reported that EA laid off a portion of staff at BioWare’s Edmonton headquarters and permanently transferred many remaining employees to other divisions. That account provides a broader picture of layoffs and transfers, but it does not give a complete, writer-by-writer employment record. Los Angeles Times reporting. PC Gamer also reported layoff confirmations from BioWare veterans, including senior developers associated with Dragon Age and Mass Effect. PC Gamer’s report.

Why the claim about every writer is not established

The reporting supports a narrower conclusion: BioWare’s workforce changed after The Veilguard, some employees were laid off, and many others moved to different EA divisions. It does not identify every person who contributed writing to the game and then document that person’s employment status. Without that complete roster and individual evidence, it is not possible to say that all of the writers were fired—or to give a reliable count of how many were.

A layoff, an internal transfer, a voluntary departure, and leaving at another time are different outcomes. The public accounts do not justify assigning any particular one to a writer unless that person’s status was reported specifically.

How the changes fit the release timeline

EA announced on August 15, 2024, that The Veilguard would launch on October 31 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. EA’s launch announcement. BioWare’s January 2025 update came after release and identified the next Mass Effect as the studio’s active project. The later reporting described layoffs and transfers in that post-release period; it did not establish that every writer’s employment ended because of the game’s performance.

The Los Angeles Times reported that EA said the game reached 1.5 million players, 50% below the company’s expectations. EA CEO Andrew Wilson characterized its launch as high-quality and well-reviewed, while saying it had not resonated with a broad enough audience in a competitive market. Those are EA’s statements about the game’s performance; they do not, by themselves, establish the reason for any individual employee’s departure.
