Did Bungie Steal Antireal’s Art for Marathon? Why the Incident Was a Breaking Point for Some Players

Bungie confirmed that unauthorized artist decals made it into Marathon, after artist Fern Hook, who publishes work as Antireal, said the game’s alpha used designs from her 2017 posters. That makes the specific decal-use allegation more than an unverified resemblance claim. Whether it was “the last straw” is a judgment, not a measured response from all players; the incident’s weight comes from the admission, Bungie’s stated response, the later resolution, and earlier artist-use controversies.

Did Bungie steal Antireal’s art for Marathon?

Antireal alleged that designs from posters she made in 2017 appeared in Marathon’s alpha. The Washington Post reported her account and quoted her saying the alpha was “covered with assets lifted from poster designs I made in 2017.” Bungie then acknowledged unauthorized artist decals had been included in a texture sheet by a former Bungie artist and that the sheet was used in-game. The Washington Post’s May 16, 2025 report therefore supports a precise conclusion: Bungie confirmed unauthorized decal use, not that every part of Marathon’s art direction was copied.

Bungie said, “We immediately investigated a concern regarding unauthorized use of artist decals in Marathon and confirmed that a former Bungie artist included these in a texture sheet that was ultimately used in-game.” It also said, “The issue was unknown by our existing art team, and we are still reviewing how this oversight occurred.” The statement identifies how the decals entered the game, but does not establish who personally knew what or when, or that the design team intentionally copied Hook’s broader aesthetic.

What happened, and when?

Date What was reported
May 15–16, 2025 Antireal’s allegation became public, and Bungie acknowledged unauthorized decals in a texture sheet used in-game. The Washington Post report is dated May 16. Source: The Washington Post.
June 17, 2025 Bungie delayed the planned September 23 release after alpha feedback. The studio cited broader goals, including stronger survival gameplay, more environmental storytelling, improved visual fidelity, and better solo and duo play. Its public rationale was broader than the art controversy. Source: Bungie.
December 2, 2025 Antireal said the issue had been resolved with Bungie and Sony Interactive Entertainment “to my satisfaction.” The reported statement did not disclose the terms. Source: PC Gamer.
March 5, 2026 Marathon launched on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Source: Bungie.
March 6, 2026 PC Gamer reported that Antireal was credited in the released game as a freelance visual design consultant. The reporting does not establish that the credit was part of the resolution’s terms. Source: PC Gamer.

Why did the controversy feel like a breaking point?

The allegation landed against a history of artist-use disputes involving Bungie. The Washington Post noted that in 2024 a fan’s Destiny-inspired toy-gun artwork was used as a model for a licensed Nerf gun; Bungie said it would credit and compensate the artist. The paper also referred to a 2023 Destiny 2 cutscene case involving an artist’s work. These are context for accumulated trust concerns, not proof that the cases had identical facts or outcomes. The Washington Post’s reporting discusses the earlier cases.

Cronos - PlayStation 5
  • Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
  • Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
  • The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
  • The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
  • This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.

For players who see a pattern, the Marathon incident can reasonably be a breaking point: the studio acknowledged that unauthorized work entered a released creative process, and the artist herself said the issue was later resolved to her satisfaction. Those facts can coexist. The acknowledgment does not undo the original use, while the resolution statement matters when assessing what happened afterward.

What is known about the resolution?

Antireal’s public statement was: “The Marathon art issue has been resolved with Bungie and Sony Interactive Entertainment to my satisfaction.” No payment amount, legal settlement, or other private terms are established in the cited reporting. Her later credit as a freelance visual design consultant is also reported, but there is no evidence in that reporting that it was a negotiated term of the resolution.

What the controversy does—and does not—establish

  • Established: Antireal said her 2017 poster designs appeared in the alpha, and Bungie confirmed unauthorized decals from a former artist’s texture sheet were used in-game.
  • Stated by Bungie: Its existing art team did not know about the issue; it was reviewing how the oversight occurred and said it would improve checks for documenting contributions.
  • Not established: The private terms of the resolution, any individual’s intent or knowledge, or that the art issue alone caused the release delay.
  • Not established: That every similarity in Marathon’s visual style came from Antireal’s work, or that the incident represents the opinion of all players.
