Google searches for a French swear word rose around the launch of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, according to a May 2025 report. That does not show that people actually used French cuss words more often—or that the game caused the search increase.
What changed after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 launched?
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, developed by French studio Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive, launched on April 24, 2025. A May 19 report by Outrun Gaming says U.S. Google searches for one French swear-word query rose after launch and peaked between April 27 and May 3.

That has not been established. The reported evidence is about search interest, not spoken or written language use. A rise in searches could reflect curiosity about the game, its language, or other factors, but the timing alone cannot show what prompted the searches or whether anyone used the word more often afterward.

The report describes other U.S. searches rising around the same period: “patate,” “gommage,” “learn French,” and France each reached a 30-day high soon after launch. It reports a Google Trends Interest Over Time score of 100 for “patate” on April 24, a peak for “gommage” on April 27, a peak for France on April 28, and a peak for “learn French” on April 30. Those dates suggest a broader burst of French-related search interest, not proof that the game caused it.
What do the Google Trends figures mean?
The reported “100” for “patate” is a normalized Google Trends Interest Over Time score within the comparison, not a count of searches. The article also says searches for “belle époque france” rose 1,250%, but does not provide enough methodological detail to treat that number as a general or lasting trend. Both figures are reported by Outrun Gaming; the underlying Trends comparison was not independently verified here.

What else is known about the game’s reach?
A separate May 6, 2025 report said the game had sold over 2 million copies in its first 12 days. That is a historical sales milestone, not a current total. Its popularity makes a connection between the game and increased curiosity plausible, but sales do not prove that it drove searches or changed how people speak.

A 2024 University of Lille dissertation found that 62.8% of sampled French swear words and 46.5% of sampled regular French words contained at least one consonant from its specified low-sonority group. This is a finding about sound patterns in the sampled words—not evidence that people swear more, or that a game changes language use. The dissertation also notes limitations in collecting its fictional French swear-word sample and describes its result for that sample as a non-significant tendency. What can be concluded?
The narrow, supported takeaway is that a 2025 report described a post-launch rise in U.S. Google searches for an unnamed French swear-word query. It does not establish that “everyone” used more French cuss words, or that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 caused any change in actual use. A 2022 study of profanity in online reviews found that swear words can affect perceived helpfulness and product attitudes depending on their number and style, but that research concerns consumer reviews—not this game or French-language behavior.
