Third-party trackers and news reports estimated that Counter-Strike skin-market value fell by roughly $1.75 billion to $2 billion after Valve changed Trade Up Contracts on October 22, 2025. That was an estimated repricing of digital items—not a confirmed $2 billion cash loss announced by Valve. The update created a new route from five Covert skins to a knife or gloves, changing the potential supply of those items.
What Valve changed in the October 22, 2025 update
Valve expanded Trade Up Contracts to accept five Covert-quality weapon skins. The output depends on whether the inputs are regular or StatTrak:
- Five StatTrak Covert items: one StatTrak Knife from a collection represented among the inputs.
- Five regular Covert items: one regular Knife or one regular Gloves item from a collection represented among the inputs.
Those are the mechanics Valve announced in its October 22, 2025 Counter-Strike 2 update notes. The important change was the new conversion path: Covert skins could now serve as inputs for items that previously had no such Trade Up Contract route.
Why the change could move skin prices
Trade-up inputs and outputs are linked by supply and demand. If players can use Covert skins to pursue knives or gloves, those inputs may become more attractive as crafting materials. At the same time, a route that can create more knives and gloves may put downward pressure on the prices of some existing output items. That is a plausible market mechanism, not a price outcome Valve specified or guaranteed.

The update did not mean every skin lost the same amount of value. Individual prices can respond differently depending on the item, collection, demand and trading venue. A market-wide total is an estimate that combines many item values; a fall in that estimate is best understood as repricing, not money literally being removed from an account or a single exchange.
Where the “$2 billion” estimate comes from
The headline figure is shorthand for a sharp estimated decline, and reports used different measurements and time windows. None of the figures below is an official Valve market-cap statistic:

Why the totals differ
The reports do not provide a shared dataset that makes their numbers directly comparable. Estimates can vary with the before-and-after timestamps, the trading venues and item categories counted, and whether a figure reflects listed prices, completed trades or another tracker method. Bloomberg’s headline, its reported percentage decline and the overnight figure in its metadata are also not identical measures.

PC Gamer cautioned that market estimates rely on third-party skin platforms and traders, and that high-end valuations can be entangled with crypto and other speculative assets. In its October 23, 2025 report, Rich Stanton wrote that he was not convinced a firm dollar amount could be assigned to the market. That is why “roughly $1.75 billion to $2 billion” is a useful description of the widely reported estimate, but not a precise audited loss.

The market did not necessarily remain at its immediate post-update low. Binance Research’s later estimate put aggregate capitalization around $5.6 billion at the time its report was written, after estimating an initial move from approximately $5.9 billion to $3.5 billion. Those dated figures indicate a reported recovery; they should not be read as a live valuation for October 2026.

Valve also changed Trade Up Contract rules again on May 21, 2026. Its update notes say Souvenir items can be selected alongside normal-quality items, but all Souvenir attributes are removed and the result is a normal item one quality level higher from a collection among the selected inputs. That later rule does not alter what the October 2025 change did, but it matters when describing the contract system as it stood after May 2026.

- Confirmed: Valve introduced the five-Covert route to Knife or Gloves outputs on October 22, 2025.
- Estimated: Publishers and trackers reported a sharp aggregate decline, with totals and percentages that varied by source and measurement window.
- Not established: Valve did not announce an audited $2 billion loss, and the available figures do not establish that every skin fell in value or that the market stayed at its immediate low.
