Yes. On Nintendo Switch 2 launch day, June 5, 2025, customers at a GameStop store in Staten Island, New York, reported that staples attaching receipts to console boxes punctured some screens. GameStop said the case was isolated to one store and that replacements were offered; the number of affected consoles has not been established.
What happened at the GameStop store?
Customers reported that employees stapled purchase receipts to Switch 2 boxes and that the staples reached through the packaging and punctured some console screens. The reports concerned a GameStop in Staten Island, New York, on the console’s launch day. GameSpot’s June 6, 2025 update attributed the incident details and response to GameStop.
In a statement reproduced by Nintendo Wire on June 5, 2025, GameStop said: “We’ve addressed a unique case of staples damaging Switch 2 screens—isolated to one store. Replacements have been offered. Staplers have been confiscated.”
How many screens were damaged, and were customers given replacements?
No verified total for damaged consoles has been reported. GameStop described the affected customers as a “very small fraction,” and said replacements were offered. GameSpot reported that the very small fraction of affected customers were swiftly given replacements. The available accounts do not establish a count or confirm that every affected customer received one.

Was the problem limited to one store?
GameStop said the case was isolated to one store—the Staten Island location. The reporting does not establish a chain-wide problem, so the incident should not be treated as evidence that receipts were stapled to Switch 2 boxes at other GameStop stores.
Was this related to the Switch 2 launch rush?
The incident occurred on June 5, 2025, the day Switch 2 launched. Nintendo later reported that the console sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide during its first four days, June 5–8, calling that the highest global first-four-day sales level for any Nintendo hardware at the time. That figure is launch context only; it says nothing about how many GameStop customers had damaged screens. Nintendo’s June 11, 2025 announcement provides the sales figure.

What was the “Staples not included” promotion?
In a separate follow-up in June 2025, Nintendo Life reported that GameStop used the tagline “Staples not included” in a Switch 2 restock promotion. Nintendo Life also reported that the promotional image prompted a photo-credit complaint from Bloomberg journalist Chris Welch and identified Janelle Jones as the original photographer. This later promotion was distinct from the store incident.
