HoYoverse announced the discontinuation of one version: the PlayStation 4 release. Updates for that version stopped on April 8, 2026, and PS4 players lost the ability to log in after that date. The PS5 version and the game on other platforms were not part of the change, and official updates continued into late 2026.
What ended on PS4, and when
HoYoverse published its notice, titled “Notice on the Removal and Discontinuation of Updates for Genshin Impact on PS4,” on August 6, 2025. The change happened in three separate steps, and each one affected players differently. Readers who saw “ending” headlines in 2025 were most likely seeing only the first step.

The notice does not say how long the library re-download path stayed open. Because the login cutoff applied from April 8, 2026, that path matters only for the period before that date.
Why HoYoverse gave for the change
The notice attributes the decision to two constraints: “limitations related to hardware performance and platform application size.” In other words, the PS4 hardware and the size of the game’s application were the stated reasons for dropping support in “future versions.” The notice does not give technical figures for either constraint, so readers should treat them as the company’s explanation rather than measured data.
What did not change
HoYoverse was explicit about scope. The notice states: “Genshin Impact on PS5® will continue to operate normally and is not affected by the removal and update discontinuation on PS4®.”

- Version 5.7 was announced on June 18, 2025, with the new playable character Skirk and new story content. This came before the PS4 notice and shows the game was still receiving regular content updates in 2025.
- Version 7.1 appears on HoYoverse’s official news listing with a launch date of September 23, 2026. That listing confirms that official updates continued well after 2025. It does not on its own document the status of every platform at every moment, so the PS5 statement in the notice remains the authoritative platform-level source.
If you still play on PS4
The notice gives two supported paths and says progress would not be affected by either:

- Move your account to PS5, the platform HoYoverse named explicitly as unaffected.
- Move to another supported platform. The notice does not name these platforms, so check HoYoverse’s official Genshin Impact pages for the current list.
The notice does not compare hardware prices, performance, or other trade-offs between these options. If you are weighing the cost of a PS5 against staying on a different platform, that comparison is up to you.

Why the “2025 ending” idea spread
The confusion comes from the timing. The first change, the store removal on September 10, 2025, arrived in the same year as the question, and it was easy to read as the start of a shutdown. The later steps came in 2026, so a reader who saw only the 2025 headline would have missed them. Taken together, the dates show a platform-specific end of service that unfolded over several months, not a game-wide closure in 2025.
- The removal of the PS4 version from the store was not the same as ending the game.
- Ending purchases was not the same as ending updates.
- The login cutoff on April 8, 2026 was the point at which PS4 access actually ended.
Readers still on PS4 should note that the April 2026 cutoff has already passed. Any PS4 account that was not moved to a supported platform by that date should be expected to have lost login access, based on the notice’s own wording.
