The original Halo: Combat Evolved had multiplayer through split-screen on one Xbox and System Link between consoles. It did not offer official Xbox Live player-versus-player (PvP) at launch. Online Xbox Live multiplayer was explicitly supported in Halo 2.
What “multiplayer” meant in the original Halo
Multiplayer can mean competing against other players or cooperating through the campaign. The original Halo: Combat Evolved supported local competitive matches, but its launch-era options were not the same as online play through Xbox Live.
- Split-screen: Players use one Xbox and share a display divided into separate views. The original game manual specifies up to four players on one Xbox.
- System Link: Multiple Xbox consoles connect over a local network for a shared game. This is local network play, not Xbox Live.
- Xbox Live: Online play through Microsoft’s service. The original Combat Evolved did not offer official Xbox Live PvP at release.
The original game manual, preserved as a scan by Halopedia, documents its split-screen and System Link multiplayer options. [c005]
How multiplayer changed with later Halo games
Halo 2 made online competition an explicit option: its Microsoft-published manual lists Xbox Live alongside split-screen and System Link. [c004] Later games also support campaign co-op, where players work together through story missions rather than compete in PvP.

Campaign co-op in The Master Chief Collection
In Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC), campaign co-op limits vary by game. Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 support up to two campaign players; Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4 support up to four. On Xbox, split-screen campaign co-op is limited to two players at a time. These are campaign co-op limits, not competitive match sizes. [c001]
The Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary manual also describes playing the original campaign in split-screen offline or over Xbox LIVE. That co-op option is separate from the original game’s launch-era PvP offerings. [c002]

So, did Halo have online multiplayer?
The answer depends on which game and which kind of play you mean. The original Halo: Combat Evolved had multiplayer, but its competitive options were local split-screen and System Link—not official Xbox Live PvP at launch. Halo 2 explicitly added Xbox Live to its documented multiplayer options.
