Helldivers 2 players celebrated a real policy reversal: after backlash to Sony’s plan to require Steam players to link a PlayStation Network account, Sony said on May 5, 2024, that the update would not move forward. The community cast the result as a completed “Major Order,” but the available statements do not establish that player pressure was the sole cause.
What Sony planned for Steam players
On May 3, 2024, Sony and Arrowhead announced that Steam players would have to link a PlayStation Network account to play Helldivers 2. A contemporaneous report said the requirement was scheduled to begin for new players on May 6, with existing players facing a June 4 deadline: PC Gamer’s report on the planned linking requirement.

The proposal prompted widespread objections and negative Steam reviews. PC Gamer later reported that the review campaign included over 200,000 negative reviews; that is the publication’s reported figure, not an independently audited total. It also reported that the game had been removed from sale in 177 countries and territories where PSN was unavailable: PC Gamer’s report on the commemorative cape and controversy.
What changed on May 5, 2024
PlayStation announced that the planned linking update would not proceed. Its official account said: “Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.” The statement is reproduced in a Steam discussion page.

The statement explicitly acknowledged player feedback, and the backlash preceded the reversal. It did not quantify the role feedback played or say it was the only factor, so it is fair to say players helped shape the outcome—not that the cited sources prove they alone forced Sony’s hand.
Why the community called it a “Major Order”
“Major Orders” are in-game objectives in Helldivers 2, so players borrowed that language to describe their campaign and its outcome. After Sony reversed course, the r/Helldivers moderator team posted “Major Order: Operation Clean Up,” saying, “Sony has reversed their decision to move forward with the account linking update,” and asking players to consider changing their negative Steam reviews: the moderator post.

That post records the community’s celebratory framing and its appeal to review-bombing participants. It does not show how many players changed reviews or establish that the Steam score fully recovered.

The cape renewed the celebration more than a year after the reversal; it was not part of Sony’s May 2024 policy announcement. PC Gamer quoted player InitiateXal describing the campaign as, “We won the biggest and longest running Major Order in the game to date.” That is a player’s interpretation, not a statement from Sony or Arrowhead.

So, did Helldivers 2 players win?
In practical terms, the policy change they opposed was canceled: Sony announced that the Steam-to-PSN linking update would not go ahead. Calling that a player victory is a reasonable community interpretation, especially because PlayStation acknowledged feedback. The sources support the sequence of backlash followed by reversal, but not a precise causal share, a claim that every negative review was later changed, or a measurement of full review-score recovery.
