In June 2018, Mail.Ru Games Ventures (MRGV) announced a partnership with Unity Technologies to consider Made with Unity projects for investment. The offer was a potential funding opportunity with support for selected teams—not a grant or a promise that every Unity developer would receive money. Available sources do not establish whether the partnership or an application route remains active.

What did Mail.Ru and Unity announce?

Contemporaneous coverage reported on June 7, 2018, that Mail.Ru Group’s games investment division, MRGV, had partnered with Unity. Unity was to provide technical and analytical support to Made with Unity projects that received MRGV funding. GamesBeat’s June 2018 report describes the announcement.

Mail.Ru Group’s 2018 annual report characterizes the arrangement as a strategic partnership with Unity and Epic Games. Engine-company partners were expected to help MRGV identify teams for cooperation and investment. Teams funded by MRGV could access Mail.Ru resources including analytical data and tools, marketing instruments, data-security technologies, and gaming services such as marketplaces. These benefits were associated with funded teams; the report does not say that all applicants or all Unity developers received them. Mail.Ru Group’s annual reports and financial materials

Who could seek funding, and what was offered?

The opportunity concerned Unity developers and projects that MRGV might consider for funding. The announcement did not set out a guaranteed award, standard grant, fixed investment amount per project, or published deal terms. It is more accurate to understand it as an investment relationship in which selected teams could also receive technical, analytical, and business support.

  • Funding: potential investment from MRGV, subject to selection.
  • Unity support: technical and analytical assistance for Made with Unity projects receiving funding, as described in contemporaneous coverage.
  • Mail.Ru resources: the 2018 annual report lists analytics, marketing, security technologies, and gaming services, including marketplaces, as possible resources for MRGV-funded teams.

How did the partnership fit Mail.Ru’s games investment plans?

Mail.Ru Group announced its games investment division in April 2017. The company said it was proposing up to $100 million in potential long-term funding and had allocated $10 million for initial deals. Those were figures and plans announced in 2017; they do not establish how much capital remained available when the Unity partnership was announced in 2018, or whether any of it is available now. The original release said the initiative was open to developers in Russia and globally and could support both established studios seeking to scale and young developers. It named royalty investments and mergers and acquisitions among possible strategies. Mail.Ru Group’s April 2017 announcement, distributed by PR Newswire

In that 2017 release, Mail.Ru Group CEO (Russia) Boris Dobrodeev described the investment division as a way to support business development and grow the company’s games segment. The quote refers to the division’s launch, not specifically to the later Unity partnership.

Can developers apply to this program now?

The announcement is historical. Mail.Ru Group’s 2019 investor presentation lists 13 venture investments in a historical games portfolio snapshot, showing later activity in the area, but it does not confirm that the Unity partnership continued or that applications are currently open. The available sources do not establish a current application page, contact route, eligibility checklist, or active funding pool for this specific partnership. Developers should not treat the 2018 announcement or the 2017 funding figures as a present-day offer. Any current MRGV or successor program would need to be confirmed through an up-to-date official channel before a studio relies on it.
