But influence is not the same as imitation. The real question is whether Revival carries over the survival-horror tools while losing the intimate, fear-first rhythm Capcom said it wanted for RE7. Its combat-heavy, more linear flow makes that a fair criticism—not a settled verdict.
What did Hellraiser: Revival take from Resident Evil 7?
In a Gamescom hands-on preview published by DBLTAP on August 28, 2025, assistant game director Aleksandra Pelivanovic said, “Resident Evil 7, 8, and 4 were our big inspirations and references.” That is unusually clear evidence of influence, though it does not establish that Revival copies any one of those games or that the influence harmed it.

The preview describes familiar survival-horror ingredients: stealth, melee and ranged weapons, limited ammunition, and powers tied to the Genesis Configuration. Those systems give the player ways to evade or fight threats while making resources matter. The game is a first-person, single-player survival-horror action game, according to its Steam listing.

That foundation makes the comparison more than a visual resemblance. Yet the games’ shared viewpoint and resource pressure do not guarantee that they create the same kind of fear.

What was Resident Evil 7 trying to do differently?
Capcom’s account of RE7’s design frames its goal as restoring the fear players associated with the original Resident Evil and bringing horror down to an intimate, personal scale. The developers also discussed first person as a way to support that close, unsettling experience. In the official Capcom developer interview, the central question was: “How do we get people playing today to experience the same fear that they felt in 1996 with the first game?”
That aim is not proof that RE7 had no action, or that action automatically undermines horror. It does, however, give the comparison a useful standard: do combat and progression leave the player feeling vulnerable and trapped, or do they increasingly make the player feel equipped to clear obstacles?

Where the comparison breaks down
Combat and pressure
Revival has multiple combat options, including melee and ranged weapons, alongside limited ammunition and stealth. Scarcity can create tension, but the availability of ways to engage enemies also makes combat a more prominent part of the player’s toolkit. GamesRadar’s launch review describes combat as taking a larger role than the game’s Resident Evil-like spaces might suggest.
That is the strongest basis for saying Revival may have learned the wrong lesson: it appears to borrow recognizable survival-horror structures without necessarily reproducing RE7’s stated emphasis on intimate fear. This is an interpretation of the design evidence, not a claim that every player will find the game less frightening.

Exploration, puzzles, and pacing
GamesRadar characterizes Revival as more linear. Its rooms and puzzles may recall Resident Evil, but that resemblance does not mean its overall exploration follows the same rhythm. In a PlayStation Blog discussion published August 19, 2026, a developer described inventory management as similar to the Resident Evil games. That supports a specific mechanical parallel, not a claim that the two games have identical inventory or puzzle systems.
Linearity can sharpen a horror sequence by controlling what the player sees and when; it can also reduce the uncertainty of choosing where to explore. The available launch assessment supports calling Revival more linear, but does not establish a universal measure of how its pacing compares with RE7.

The supernatural centerpiece
Revival is not simply a Resident Evil scenario with a different setting. Its Genesis Configuration powers and Hellraiser world give it a distinct supernatural identity. Creative Bloq’s launch review points to an original Barker-inspired story, Resident Evil-style puzzles, and the Labyrinth’s distinctive design—evidence against treating the game as a clone. Assistant game director Srdan Nedic said the team went “as far as possible because we need to do justice to the franchise,” as quoted in DBLTAP’s preview.
So, is Hellraiser: Revival like Resident Evil 7?
Yes, in the qualified sense that its developer explicitly named RE7 as an influence and the game uses recognizable survival-horror elements, including first-person play, resource pressure, puzzles, and inventory management. No, if “like RE7” means it necessarily shares the same horror priorities or pacing. The launch review’s description of a more linear, combat-forward flow points to a meaningful difference.

Calling that difference the “wrong lesson” is an argument about emphasis. If the lesson taken from RE7 is that first person, scarce resources, and Resident Evil-style spaces can support horror, Revival has clear connections. If the lesson is that those ingredients work best when they serve intimate vulnerability, then the reported weight of combat raises a reasonable doubt. The sources do not settle whether the game succeeds at fear for every player; they do support distinguishing its borrowed survival-horror grammar from its own Hellraiser identity.
Release and platforms
Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival released on October 8, 2026, according to its Steam listing and launch coverage. GamesRadar lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2; the PlayStation Blog also confirmed the PS5 release date ahead of launch. Platform availability can vary by region, so check the relevant current store listing.
