The claim traces to a 2014 CSO Online article relaying an allegation from an unnamed North Korean source via the Daily Star; it was not independently corroborated, and the original Daily Star report was not located. CSO Online’s account should be read as an unverified report, not established fact.
What the report actually claimed
CSO Online published the story on March 30, 2014, attributing the allegation to an unnamed North Korean source quoted by the Daily Star. The source was said to have described Kim Jong-un as having Western games, including Homefront, and liking its imagined Korean takeover scenario. Because the source was anonymous and the original Daily Star article was not found, the claim has a limited, indirect sourcing trail.
CSO also relayed a separate account involving South Korean use of Kinect technology for surveillance. That material does not verify anything about Kim Jong-un or his alleged game-playing, and the two stories should not be treated as corroboration for each other.
What Homefront is about
Homefront is a fictional first-person shooter developed by Kaos Studios and published by THQ. Its speculative story imagines a unified Korea becoming the Greater Korean Republic and occupying parts of the United States. A contemporaneous 2011 Korea JoongAng Daily report described the premise as highly speculative.

The plot is a work of fiction, not a documented military simulation and not evidence of real-world plans or conduct. The game’s scenario cannot establish what Kim Jong-un thought, owned, or did.
Which Xbox version the headline refers to
Contemporary coverage listed Homefront for Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3. So “Homefront on Xbox” most directly points to the Xbox 360 edition, rather than a later Xbox console release. GameSpot’s 2011 coverage also documents the platform list and changes made for the Japanese release.

How the game changed for Japan
The Japanese version changed references to Kim Jong-il and North Korea. GameSpot reported that the localization removed or altered those references. This is useful context for how the game’s fictional premise was adapted for one market; it does not strengthen the separate allegation that Kim Jong-un played the game.

In 2011, Korea JoongAng Daily reported THQ tallies of more than 1 million units sold through and 2.4 million copies shipped to retailers. These were launch-era figures, not current sales totals. The paper also reported THQ president Brian Farrell saying, “We’re very pleased with strong worldwide shipments and sell-through for Homefront, and we continue to fulfill new retail orders for the game across the globe.” Those numbers and that statement concern the game’s commercial launch, not the truth of the Kim Jong-un story.
