The headline referred to Nintendo’s March 27, 2025 Nintendo Direct, a presentation about games and announcements for the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo said Switch 2 information would arrive in a separate Direct on April 2, 2025. The two events had different focuses; the March presentation was not evidence that Nintendo had no Switch 2 news.

What did the March 2025 Nintendo Direct cover?

Nintendo’s official recap of the March 27 Direct described a slate of games and other announcements for Nintendo Switch in 2025 and beyond. Nintendo UK’s event recap likewise presented it as a showcase of upcoming Switch games, with trailers, release dates, and new announcements.

Featured games

  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
  • Rhythm Heaven Groove (called Rhythm Paradise Groove in Nintendo UK’s recap)
  • Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Other announcements and releases

Nintendo also announced the Nintendo Today! smart-device app and Virtual Game Cards. Partner games included Tamagotchi Plaza, MARVEL Cosmic Invasion, STORY OF SEASONS: Grand Bazaar, PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY, and DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake. Several titles were available that day, including SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered, Rift of the NecroDancer, and Disney Villains Cursed Café.

Was there a Switch 2 update in the March Direct?

No Switch 2 presentation was planned as part of the March 27 event. Nintendo’s recap said information about the new console would be shared in a dedicated Nintendo Direct on April 2, 2025. That separate presentation took place at 6 a.m. PT, and Nintendo’s recap of the April 2 Direct describes a closer look at Switch 2 and its features, along with announcements for upcoming Switch 2 games.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

So “no Switch 2 updates” describes the focus of that particular March Direct. It should not be read as a claim that Nintendo had no Switch 2 information to share; the company directed viewers to the April presentation for that.

What the headline does—and does not—tell you

The March Direct is a historical event, not an upcoming broadcast. Its announcements show what Nintendo presented for Switch at that time, but they do not establish the full release schedule or support plans for the original console through 2026. Nor do the event recaps establish that this was the final Direct focused on the original Switch.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

One example of a featured game’s later release is Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Nintendo’s product page lists a physical Nintendo Switch version separately from the Switch 2 Edition and gives December 4, 2025 as its release date. The editions are distinct; the Switch 2 Edition should not be treated as interchangeable with the original Switch version.
