But the developer material cited here does not explicitly identify Crane as “the Night Hunter.”
What happened to Crane at the end of The Following?
The Following is a story expansion that continues Crane’s story beyond Harran, according to Techland’s franchise page and its official FAQ. At the end, Crane encounters the Mother, and Techland later said that something between them changes him forever.

In a developer blog about Crane’s later character design, Techland explained that the ending of The Following directly inspired his appearance in Dying Light: The Beast. Art Director Katarzyna Tarnacka-Polito and Lead Character Concept Artist Katarzyna Bech described his eye as “a distinctive, predator-like feature, inspired by the Volatile.” The blog also says Crane is “no longer just human.” Read Techland’s developer blog.
Does that mean Crane is the Night Hunter?
That exact identification is not established by the cited official material. Techland connects Crane’s changed state to an event in The Following and says his later design draws on Volatile traits; it does not call him “the Night Hunter.” Those terms should not be treated as interchangeable without an explicit confirmation.

So the careful answer is: Crane becomes altered and partly nonhuman, but the available official statements do not confirm that he became the Night Hunter. Fan theories may interpret the clues differently, but they are not the same as an official identification.
Where does The Beast fit in the story?
Techland’s 2024 timeline post placed Dying Light: The Beast after Dying Light 2: Stay Human, with a 20-year gap after The Following. It said Crane had spent 13 years held captive by the Baron, and at that time described the rest of his fate as unknown. That last point reflects what the 2024 post said then; it should not be read as a statement about what later releases may have established. See Techland’s 2024 timeline post.

That order gives the context for Crane’s transformation before the later games continue the timeline.

The wording could refer to wildlife in another context, but the Black-crowned Night Heron is a heron, not a crane. Cornell Lab of Ornithology lists its scientific name as Nycticorax nycticorax. In a question about Crane and “the Night Hunter,” the likely reference is Dying Light.
