No. Masahiro Sakurai’s reported comment about the Nintendo Switch 2 presentation was not a tease or confirmation of a new Super Smash Bros. game. He said he was surprised the presentation would last about an hour and did not know what Nintendo planned to announce. Fans’ sequel theories are speculation, not evidence of a new game.
What did Sakurai actually say about the Switch 2 presentation?
In an April 1, 2025 report, GamesRadar said Sakurai reacted to Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 presentation by expressing surprise at its planned length. Nintendo had announced a presentation of approximately 60 minutes, scheduled for April 2, 2025. Sakurai’s reported clarification was: “I do not know the contents of the announcement (besides, I don’t belong to Nintendo).” GamesRadar’s report

The timing matters: the comment came before the presentation, and Sakurai was discussing what Nintendo might reveal—not announcing a game of his own. The report also says he expected people to suspect something regardless of what he said.
Why did fans connect the remark to a possible Smash sequel?
Sakurai created and directed the Super Smash Bros. series, so even a brief comment about a Nintendo event can prompt fans to wonder whether it signals a new entry. GamesRadar noted that an earlier short reaction from Sakurai to a Nintendo Direct announcement had also fueled speculation. That pattern explains the excitement, but it does not make the speculation confirmation. GamesRadar’s report on the speculation and project disclosure

Does Sakurai’s separate project disclosure mean a new Smash is in development?
No such conclusion is supported by the report. GamesRadar recounted Sakurai saying he was asked to write a game proposal in July 2021 and received approval to proceed with production in October 2021. The report does not identify that project as a Smash Bros. game, so it should not be presented as evidence of a sequel.
