Pocketpair said Palworld changed its Pal Sphere summoning and gliding mechanics because of the ongoing patent-infringement litigation brought by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. The changes were the developer’s stated compromises during the case—not feature-specific changes that Pocketpair said a court ordered. The lawsuit alleges infringement; that allegation is not a court finding.

Pocketpair directly connected both changes to the case. In its May 8, 2025 statement, the company said, “As many have speculated, these changes were indeed a result of the ongoing litigation.”
What is Nintendo’s lawsuit about?
Nintendo announced on September 19, 2024, that Nintendo and The Pokémon Company had filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair in the Tokyo District Court. Nintendo said the suit sought an injunction and damages over alleged infringement by Palworld. Nintendo’s announcement.
Pocketpair later reported that the plaintiffs asserted three Japanese patents: 7545191, 7493117, and 7528390. Pocketpair listed their application dates as July 30, 2024, February 26, 2024, and March 5, 2024, and their registration dates as August 27, May 22, and July 26, 2024, respectively. Pocketpair also said the plaintiffs requested an injunction against Palworld and 5 million yen plus late-payment damages from each plaintiff. Those amounts were requested remedies, not damages awarded by a court. The filing announcement and Pocketpair’s account describe allegations and requests; neither establishes a finding of infringement.
Has the court ruled?
The latest status established by the available reporting is not a verified post-hearing result. A Patent Arcade report published July 27, 2026, said the case remained pending, described the claims as limited to earlier, pre-patch versions of Palworld, and reported an October 1, 2026 hearing with a decision expected November 9, 2026. Pocketpair’s May 8, 2025 statement described the proceedings as ongoing and said, “Currently, we remain involved in prolonged legal proceedings regarding alleged patent infringement.” That statement reflects the company’s position at that time, not the case’s status after the later scheduled hearing.
