In video games, a passive skill is usually an effect that applies automatically or in the background rather than requiring the player to activate it. It might improve a character’s stats, add resistance, or change how a companion performs. The exact meaning and rules vary by game, so a passive skill in one title may not work like one in another.
What does “passive skill” mean in a video game?
Gaming guides commonly use “passive skill” for an ability or modifier that does not need to be triggered manually. A general explainer describes examples such as stat bonuses and resistances, but this is common usage, not a universal game-design definition. CyberPost’s June 18, 2025 explainer uses the term in this broad sense.
That differs from games where an ability must be selected, activated, or timed by the player. A passive may still depend on conditions—such as being in combat or having a particular companion—so “automatic” does not necessarily mean “always active in every situation.” Check the individual game’s description for its trigger and scope.
How are passive skills different from active skills?
| Feature | Passive skill | Active skill |
|---|---|---|
| Activation | Usually applies automatically or in the background. | Usually requires a player action, such as selecting or triggering it. |
| Typical effect | May change stats, resistance, or a character’s efficiency. | Often produces an immediate action or effect when used. |
| Rules | Availability, conditions, and limits depend on the game. | Controls, costs, cooldowns, and limits also depend on the game. |
These are broad conventions, not rules shared by every title. A game may use different labels or make a supposedly passive effect conditional.

What are passive skills in Palworld?
A Steam Community guide by Freaky 4 Drifter describes Palworld passive skills as tags on Pals that act as modifiers. According to that user-created guide, they may affect a Pal’s stats or work efficiency, and some may affect player stats. It says Pals can have up to four distinct passive skills and describes capture and breeding as ways to obtain them. Read the guide on Steam.
Those details are specific to Palworld and to that guide; they should not be treated as general rules for passive skills or as guaranteed current mechanics. Game updates can change systems, so consult current official Palworld materials before relying on exact limits or acquisition methods for a build.

Do passive skills work the same way in every game?
No. Each title defines its own effects, conditions, acquisition methods, and limits. For example, the Outward community wiki’s search-result excerpt describes a different arrangement involving breakthrough and faction-exclusive passive skills. That is enough to illustrate that mechanics vary, but not to establish current details for Outward. The Outward Wiki page is a community reference, not a universal standard.
When evaluating a passive in a particular game, look for its in-game description and verify:

Does “passive skills” mean something outside gaming?
Yes. In English teaching, “passive” or “receptive” skills refers to listening and reading: the learner receives and understands information. Speaking and writing are considered productive or active because the learner expresses ideas. The Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education’s study material makes clear that calling receptive skills passive does not make them less important. See Unit 1, “English & Its Teaching”.
That educational meaning is unrelated to a character ability that runs in the background. In tabletop role-playing games, terminology can differ again: the Atomic RPG System’s character-skill rules, for instance, define passive skills as baseline assessments calculated from the relevant skill bonus plus 10 and used without a roll. That formula belongs to that system alone.
