Xbox has since launched two handheld gaming PCs made with ASUS—the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X—while a separate first-party handheld remains unconfirmed in the cited announcements.
What Phil Spencer said about Xbox handhelds
In an April 2025 interview with iJustine, Spencer said, “We’ve teased and talked about handhelds and I’m very excited because we both travel, and sometimes you can’t always take your console or your whole gaming desktop with you.” The quotation was reported by Insider Gaming on April 7, 2025.
That comment signals interest in portable gaming and describes a travel use case; it is not a product announcement. The report said Spencer did not commit to anything specific. He did not identify a device, give specifications, or announce a launch window.
What Xbox has actually released: ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X

Xbox describes both as Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs with an Xbox full-screen experience. They can access games from Xbox and other PC storefronts, with play options that include running compatible games locally, cloud gaming, and remote play from an Xbox console. They are not dedicated Xbox consoles, and the Xbox brand does not mean every console game runs natively on them; local play depends on a game’s PC compatibility.

Is Microsoft making a separate Xbox handheld?
The cited official announcements confirm the ASUS-collaboration Ally products and discuss Project Helix, Xbox’s next-generation hardware. They do not confirm a separate Microsoft-made handheld, or provide specifications, a price, or a release window for one. The Ally devices are real Xbox-branded products, but they should not be treated as proof that Spencer’s earlier comment announced a distinct first-party machine.

No such conclusion follows from the announcement. Xbox said on March 11, 2026 that alpha versions of Project Helix hardware were planned to reach developers beginning in 2027. The Project Helix statement concerns next-generation hardware; it does not identify a handheld or set a retail launch date. Developer alpha timing is not a consumer release date.

No date is established in the cited announcements for a separate Microsoft-made handheld.
