Revali resented Link, according to Nintendo’s official character description. The wording is more precise than saying he simply “hated” him: Revali’s sharp remarks reflect antagonism, but his later interactions with Link’s spirit are more welcoming.
Why did Revali resent Link?
Nintendo describes Revali as a skilled Rito pilot and one of Hyrule’s Champions, noting that he can be arrogant. Its official Revali character description says: “Even though he’s a Champion, Revali resents Link for being the hero of Hyrule.” That is the clearest answer to whether Revali disliked Link: Nintendo explicitly connects his resentment to Link’s role as Hyrule’s hero.
A 2018 GDC Vault narrative review describes Revali as brash, proud, and cocky, and notes his dislike of having to work under Link despite his own flight and archery abilities. Those details support reading their relationship as rivalry and wounded pride, but the sources do not establish one definitive motive such as jealousy or insecurity.
Did Revali always hate Link?
No source here supports “always” or an unchanging, absolute hatred. The GDC review describes a shift when Link retakes Vah Medoh: Revali’s spirit tacitly welcomes him, speaks more kindly during the Divine Beast sequence, and becomes friendly after Vah Medoh is back under control. That later warmth complicates the earlier antagonism; it does not erase Nintendo’s description of Revali’s resentment.

Why can players encounter the relationship differently?
Breath of the Wild presents parts of its story nonlinearly. The same GDC review notes that players can approach memories and Divine Beast quests in different orders. As a result, players may meet Revali or learn more about the Champions’ past at different points in their playthrough. It is useful to distinguish Revali’s earlier attitude from Link’s later encounter with his spirit rather than treating every scene as one continuous first meeting.

Jealousy is a plausible interpretation of Revali’s resentment, especially given his pride and frustration at having to work under Link. But Nintendo’s stated reason is that Link is Hyrule’s hero; neither that description nor the reviewed narrative analysis identifies envy as Revali’s sole motive. The firmly supported conclusion is that he resented Link and acted antagonistically, while his later spirit dialogue shows a more friendly side.
