On September 9, 2024, reports from VGC and GameSpot said U.S. retailers had raised prices on standard DualSense controllers by $5. Sony revealed the $699.99 PS5 Pro the following day. The timing is documented; the available reports do not show that Sony deliberately concealed the controller increase or tied it to the Pro announcement.
Did Sony raise the price of the PS5 DualSense controller?
VGC and GameSpot reported on September 9, 2024, that retailers had increased prices for standard DualSense controllers in the United States. Neither report described an official Sony announcement of the change. Their price summaries differ by color tier, so the reported figures should not be treated as one universal new price.

These are contemporaneous reported U.S. retailer prices, not a statement of current pricing. VGC said it had seen increases at multiple North American retailers, including Best Buy, Target, and PlayStation Direct, and reported no sign of an increase outside the U.S. at that time. That was a dated observation, not a worldwide price guarantee.

Did the DualSense price increase happen before the PS5 Pro reveal?
Yes. The retailer price changes were reported September 9, 2024; Sony announced PS5 Pro on September 10. Sony listed a recommended U.S. price of $699.99, a November 7, 2024 launch, a 2TB SSD, and one DualSense controller included with the console.
The one-day sequence is the basis for saying the increase was “buried” beneath the expensive reveal. But neither the contemporaneous retailer reports nor Sony’s Pro announcement establishes that Sony deliberately timed or hid the controller change. Sony’s announcement did not mention the reported price increase.

What did Sony say about PS5 Pro?
Sony presented PS5 Pro as a more powerful version of PS5, citing 67 percent more Compute Units than the current PS5, 28 percent faster memory, and up to 45 percent faster gameplay rendering. Those are Sony’s stated specifications, not independent benchmark results.
Sony also said PS5 Pro would support more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. Its Game Boost feature may stabilize or improve performance in supported games; Sony did not promise a particular improvement for every title. The company said current PS5 accessories are compatible with PS5 Pro, which includes the DualSense controller.
