Sony’s headline upgrades are a stronger GPU, advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), but the benefits depend on how each game’s developer uses them. A Pro badge does not guarantee the same resolution, frame rate or visual uplift in every title.
When did the PS5 Pro come out?
Sony announced PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, and released it on November 7, 2024. In the announcement, Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, called it “our most advanced and innovative console hardware to date” (Sony’s announcement). That was Sony’s promotional description, not an independent performance assessment.

What does PS5 Pro improve?
Sony’s announcement focused on three areas: an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing and PSSR, its image-upscaling technology. These are capabilities developers can use to improve image quality, performance, or both in supported games. The console’s hardware alone does not determine the result: developers decide whether and how to implement Pro-specific features.
Sony explicitly says that PS5 Pro-enhanced features vary by game. That means there is no single uplift that applies across the library, and a Pro label does not promise a particular resolution or frame rate. The relevant questions are what a specific game’s modes deliver, how consistent performance is, and whether its ray-tracing or upscaling implementation changes the experience.

Were developers preparing PS5 Pro games?
Yes. Before launch, Sony published commentary from developers discussing how they were using the console’s technology, including rendering changes and PSSR (Sony’s developer feature, September 24, 2024). At launch, Sony said that several games would receive free PS5 Pro Enhanced software updates.
Sony’s November 7, 2024 launch announcement named these examples: Alan Wake 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, F1 24, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Metal Gear Solid Delta, No Man’s Sky, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered (Sony’s launch announcement). This is a launch-era set of named games, not a complete or current catalog; check a game’s current store listing or patch notes to confirm its support and features.
How to judge a PS5 Pro-enhanced game
Compare the specific game’s available modes rather than assuming that the console upgrade will make every title look or run better in the same way. Useful details include:
Rank #2
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
- Image quality and resolution: Check the mode’s stated output and whether the game uses PSSR or other rendering changes.
- Frame rate and consistency: Look for the target rate and evidence about how well the game maintains it; a target alone is not a guarantee.
- Ray tracing: Identify which effects are added or improved, if any.
- Patch and game support: Confirm that the developer has provided a Pro-specific update and what it changes.
Sony’s launch materials establish the console’s capabilities and examples of supported titles, but they do not provide a universal measured performance gain. The useful comparison is game by game, including the modes available on the console you already own and whether those differences matter on your display.
What Sony’s launch announcement does—and does not—establish
The announcement and developer coverage show that PS5 Pro was real, that studios discussed using its technology before launch, and that Sony named games slated for Pro-enhanced updates at release. They do not establish that every game has a Pro patch, that each named game still offers the same features today, or that all players will see an identical improvement. Support and outcomes remain title-specific.
