No. A 2020 report described a Sony patent concept for surfacing game help, but it did not confirm that an AI coach was planned for or built into PlayStation 5. The report’s PS5 connection was explicitly speculative. Sony has published other, separate gaming-assistance patent applications since then; those filings also do not establish a released console feature.
What did the 2020 Sony patent concept propose?
HotHardware’s February 23, 2020 report, by Shane McGlaun, called the filing “In-Game Resource Surfacing Platform.” It described a possible help flow in which a player asks how to defeat a boss, speech is sent for cloud processing, and the system infers what the player needs. It could then surface resources associated with players who succeeded, rather than simply offering a generic hint. Read the 2020 report.
The report illustrated the idea with screen text saying, “80 percent of players like you defeated the boss using resource X.” That is sample interface copy for the concept—not a measured statistic, and not evidence that 80 percent of actual players used a particular strategy. The article also described a possible purchase link for a suggested resource.
Was an AI coach confirmed for PS5?
No. The 2020 article said the technology “could possibly turn up” on the then-upcoming PS5. That was the article’s inference about a possible use, not a Sony product announcement. A patent description documents a proposed invention; by itself, it does not show that a company built it, selected it for a console, or released it. The 2020 report therefore cannot establish that PS5 has an AI coach or that the described feature is available today.

- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
How do Sony’s later gameplay-assistance patents differ?
Later patent records show other Sony proposals related to game assistance. They are separate filings with different described contexts and different legal-record categories—not successive proof that the 2020 concept became a product.
| Record | What it describes | Record status and date |
|---|---|---|
| “In-Game Resource Surfacing Platform” | Help resources suggested in response to a player’s request, with the 2020 report describing contextual recommendations based on successful players. | The 2020 report identifies the filing, but its current prosecution status is unresolved in the cited material. It is not a product announcement. HotHardware, February 23, 2020. |
| “Virtual gameplay coach” | A distinct Sony application about a gameplay coach; it should not be treated as the 2020 resource-surfacing filing. | Google Patents lists August 7, 2023 as the filing and priority date, and February 13, 2025 as the publication date. It lists Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC as assignee and the application as pending; the database cautions that legal status is an assumption, not a legal conclusion. Google Patents record. |
| “Automated artificial intelligence (AI) personal assistant” | A separate Sony patent family, useful as context for patent activity but not proof that the 2020 concept was granted or implemented. | Google Patents lists Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. as assignee and a U.S. grant record published May 6, 2025, marked active. Its status label is not a legal conclusion. Google Patents record. |
| “In-game assistant for team gameplay” | A distinct application whose title indicates a team-gameplay context. | Published January 22, 2026, with a filing date of July 17, 2024. Publication of an application is not evidence of a shipped feature. Google Patents record. |
A further Sony application, “Generative Outputs Confirming to User’s Own Gameplay to Assist User,” cites the virtual gameplay coach among related documents. That connection shows a cluster of patent proposals, not a confirmed feature roadmap or release. Google Patents record.
