As of October 8, 2026, the cited evidence still contains no official confirmation of an FFIX remake. An August 2026 report says an alleged single-game project had stalled, but that account is attributed to a journalist, not Square Enix.
What Square Enix posted—and why fans read into it
On April 7, 2025, Square Enix posted an image from Final Fantasy IX featuring the ending line “my memories will be part of the sky,” alongside the caption “if you know, you know” and a crying emoji, according to ComicBook.com’s contemporaneous report. Some fans interpreted the emotional callback as a possible remake hint. That was an interpretation of ambiguous social copy, not confirmation from the publisher.

What the 25th-anniversary announcement actually promised
On March 31, 2025, Square Enix said it was preparing “a variety of projects to commemorate the 25th anniversary, including merchandise and collaborations,” as reproduced by Nintendo Life. The statement described anniversary activity, not a remake. A separate ComicBook.com report noted merchandise such as soundtracks, figures, and plushes on the anniversary site.

What the 2026 reports say about a remake
Yoshida discussed a hypothetical remake’s scale
At the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Berlin on July 27, 2026, Naoki Yoshida discussed the hypothetical prospect of remaking Final Fantasy VI, VIII, and IX. As Time Extension reported, he said: “But if we did remake those other titles, we’d probably end up having to release them in 4 instalments or maybe even 5 instalments.” This was a comment about the possible scale of such remakes—not confirmation that an FFIX project was active or planned.
A journalist later reported that an alleged project had stalled
On August 11, 2026, Nintendo Life reported that RPG Site editor Alex Donaldson had said on ResetEra that a single-game FFIX remake was “no longer moving forward.” The report also said Donaldson believed the work could potentially be revisited. This is an attributed report of a forum comment; Square Enix did not confirm the project or its status in that coverage. It should not be restated as an official cancellation.
How the rumor began
The remake rumor can be traced in part to a 2021 list associated with an NVIDIA GeForce Now leak. NVIDIA reportedly characterized some entries as speculative, according to Nintendo Life’s anniversary coverage. The leak helps explain why fans were primed to see later anniversary posts as hints; it does not prove that a remake was announced, completed, or remains in production.

The remake is not an available product based on the cited information. The supported adjacent option is existing Final Fantasy IX anniversary merchandise: the March 2025 coverage named soundtrack items, figures, and plushes.
